    1) What attracts poor people to go and live in a capital city like London? What are the advantages and disadvantages of such a move?

Poor people are attracted to live in London because it could give them an opportunity to better their lives and make more money. A disadvantage is it might be risky if you don’t make it then it could be bad for you.

    2) How did John Dawkins acquire the nickname, "The Artful Dodger?"

John Dawkins acquires the nickname “The Artful Dodger” because he was very skilled at pickpocketing. He is also the leader of Fagin’s gang of child criminals.

    3) Select a major quotation to characterize each of the following characters and explain the reasons behind your choice: The Artful Dodger, Fagin, Mr. Brownlow, and Mr. Grimwig.

The Artful Dodger: “Well,' said the Jew, glancing slyly at Oliver, and addressing himself to the Dodger, 'I hope you've been at work this morning, my dears?' 'Hard,' replied the Dodger.”
I chose this quote for the Artful Dodger because he is very skilled at his work and works very hard on it. For Fagin I chose: “'What's that?' said the Jew. 'What do you watch me for? Why are you awake? What have you seen? Speak out, boy! Quick—quick! for your life.” I chose this quote for Fain because it shows that he is very demanding and gets what he wants. For Mr. Brownlow I chose:”'Yes, I am,' replied the old gentleman; 'but I am not sure that this boy actually took the handkerchief. I—I would rather not press the case.'” I chose this quote because it shows that he is a forgiving man even though Oliver tried to steal his handkerchief. He realizes that Oliver is not in the best situation and let him off easy.

    4) From Oliver’s from the point of view, how does he view each of the aforementioned characters?

Oliver thinks that the Artful Dodger is kind of weird and strange but is grateful for him. He thinks of Fagin as a miser, a person who hoards money and spends as little as possible.

    5) Do you think it was better for Oliver to be with Fagin and his boys or with Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry? Give reasons for your answer.

I think that it is better for Oliver to be with Fagin and his boys because he gets a little bit of better freedom and conditions. Although they’re jobs are very risky since it got them in trouble, they are not getting abused and deprived of things.

    1. they are attracted to large cities since there is a large population and a hire chance of getting money and jobs, but the disadvantage is that it is prone to mugging.
2.John Dawkins- the artful dodger. The Dodger is a pickpocket, so called for his skill and cunning in that occupation. He is the leader of the gang of child criminals, trained by the elderly Fagin.
    3.The Artful Dodger:
Huh! A friend's just an enemy in disguise. You can't trust nobody.
    Fagin:
What has become of the boy? Speak up!
    Mr. Brownlow:
How would you like to grow up a clever man and write books?
    Mr. Grimwig
    "I'll eat my head, sir,"
    4. he belives them to be honest trust worthy for the artful dodger and mean a crule for the others.
    5. since he dose not have to do hard labor, and he is treated like a human compared to the other two.

I think the fact that a city is so big, and there are so many different people in it attracts the poor there. The advantages for Oliver moving to the city are that he is distancing himself from Mr. Bumble and the Sowerberrys, but the big disadvantage is the actual move itself. It took him a long, hard week to get close to London, and he almost died. I think John Dawkin got the nickname “The Artful Dawger” from his skills as a thief. He is able to pickpocket people so well that he has been given a nickname from it. I think that Oliver is not safe with Fagin or the Sowerberrys, but I think he was a little safer with Fagin and his boys. Even though crime isn’t the safest, Oliver is still being fed and bathed, has a comfortable place to sleep, is out of Mr. Bumble’s reach and isn’t being beaten every day. I think that stealing isn’t exactly the most secure, he still has a home.

1)People are attracted to london because they saw it as a chance to start over. They saw it as an opportunity to get new jobs and provide for there families.

2)This is because of his skill of pickpocketing which he was very well known for and people could not even notice when he did do so.

3)'Work'us,' said Noah, 'how's your mother?'

'She's dead,' replied Oliver; 'don't you say anything about her to me!' I chose this quote because it shows how significant his mothers loss is to him and how it could be used against him

    4)Artful Dodger-Thought he was strange
    John dawkins-Impressed by there skills
Brownlow-A very mean or unkind person
Grimwig-Thought he was an awful person

5)I think Fagin is better because he won't be abused anymore and will do a job he doesn't mind.

What attracts the poor people to live in a capital city like London are the streets because poverty and crime do not exist. The Dodger is a pickpocketer, so he is called “The Artful Dodger” for his skill and cunning in that occupation. His entire life he has never had a family, so he is very insecure and he doesn't trust anybody.

Poor people move to big cities because there is more chance in a larger city. There are more wealthy people there so it’s easier to live and find a job but there are also more bad people in the city. People who tried to get money in a faster and easier way. John Dawkins acquire the nickname because he is a sophisticated and clever thief who is really good at acting. Oliver included that the Dodger as “being of a dissipated and careless turn, the moral precepts of his benefactor had hitherto been thrown away upon him”(p.85) I think from Oliver’s point of view, he thinks that the Dodger is a sly dog and is untrustworthy. Fagin is a cautious old man, head of the thief's group. You need the correct watchword to get in his house and he won’t even open the door by himself. I think it is better for Oliver to be with Fagin and his boys instead of Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry because after Oliver hurt Noah, he is not trustworthy anymore. Mrs. Sowerberry, Noah and Charlotte don't like him and Mr. Sowerberry is a weak man who submits to his wife. Noah often makes fun of him but he never fights back, some of his jokes are dangerous. Mr. Sowerberry likes Oliver because he is a pretty kid who can make money for him, but after he grows up, he cannot do the kid’s funeral and he will lose his usefulness. Although Fagin and his boys are thieves, they need Oliver for some longer reason so they all treat him well, at least he won’t get hurt staying there. Oliver also has more freedom in Fagin’s place which means he has more to know some good people and escape.

When looking for livelihoods, poor people move to urban area and cities because of the possibilities and opportunities available there. Often times however, they settle in small outskirt towns and experience extreme poverty.
Jack Dawkins is known as the artful dodger because he is a pickpocket and a sort of con man who can get out of any situation and trouble using just his wit.
“I never saw a sharper lad. Here’s a shilling for you. If you go in this way, you’ll be the greatest man of the time. “ this quote explains Fagin because it shows that he is kind to his pupils and that he feels proud of them, even if they are new. He will be like a good father figure for Oliver, of course he is also the leader or a gang, but it’s better than Oliver’s past situations.

What attracts poor people to go and live in a capital city like London is the large population and cities. The reason is it gives them a chance to gain money and start something to help them live a better life. The disadvantage to this is what if they don’t get what they wish it could go even more downhill for them. Jack Dawkins is known as someone who pickpockets and can get himself out of anything. I think it would be better if Olivier was with Fagin and his boys because he’s safer. He won’t get hurt here and I think he has much more freedom here.

    1) People move to big cities to have more job opportunities, accessibility to entertainment. Though disease could spread quickly and the lack of room for people.

    2) John Dawkins aka: The Artful Dodger acquired his name because he was a child pickpocket who was swift and cunning. He also was the leader of a child gang who pickpocketed too.

    3)
Dodger: John Dawkins can be characterised by this quote “'I suppose you want some place to sleep in to-night, don't you?'” John Dawkins asked Oliver if he wanted somewhere to sleep for the night. He helps Oliver because he is recruiting to steal more money, but at the end of chapter 10 Dodger joins a group of people shouting “Thief” at Oliver.

Fagin: Fagin the jewish friend of Dodger which was for me characterised form this quote "Once let him feel that he is one of us; once fill his mind with the idea that he has been a thief, and he’s ours,– ours for his life!" He manipulates poor Oliver in to joining their pickpocketing gang and become a criminal.

Mr. Brownlow: Mr. Brownlow is a good man who takes Oliver in when he sees he has a fever. He gives Oliver a chance to have a education and let him read. This character can be described with this quote "You shall read them if you behave well,"

Mr. Grimwig: Mr.Grimwig is a friend of Brownlow, he is a fellow who thinks Oliver is going to be a bad person and also he is very condescending on Oliver. His character can only be described by this quote “I’ll eat my head” He says this every time when he thinks is right he is right about something

    4).
Dodger: Oliver meets Dodger when he is walking to London, Dodger politely and cunningly recruits Oliver to his pickpocket gang. At the end of chapter 10 John betrays Oliver and lets him get caught. Oliver after that point disliked him very much and looks like he will never have a real person to trust.

Fagin: Oliver meets Fagin when Dodger takes him back to where he stays he is very polite at first but then makes up a plan to manipulate Oliver. I think Oliver just doesn’t like anyone in that group.

Mr.Brownlow: Oliver meets Mr.Brownlow after trying to steal something, Mr.Brownlow takes Oliver in and feeds him and lets him read some books. I think Oliver likes Brownlow because he does not judge him because he is poor and he thinks Oliver is a good person.
Mr.Grimwig: Grimwig which is a friend of Brownlow met Oliver and immediately thought Oliver would grow up to be a bad person he is basically a duality to Mr.Brownlow. Oliver does not like him because he judges him because he is poor.

    5) I think Oliver should have stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry because if he stayed and ignored Noah he would have been making money after he completes his apprenticeship. Also if he went with Fagin he would have been caught and betrayed again and probably hung to death at the gallows.

    2)
John Dawkins acquired the name "The Artful Dodger?" by being very skilled in the arts of pickpocketing.

    3)
The Artful Dodger-”What was Oliver's horror and alarm as he stood a few paces off, looking on with his eyelids as wide open as they would possibly go, to see the Dodger plunge his hand into the old gentleman's pocket, and draw from thence a handkerchief!” I chose this quote to describe the Dodger because it shows how good he is at pickpocketing and also that Oliver was surprised when he saw him steal the handkerchief

Fagin-'Is it gone?' I used this quote to describe him because he was worried about one lost handkerchief which turned out to not even be gone

    4)
The Artful Dodger-Oliver thought he was a little bit strange

Fagin-Oliver thinks he is a very cheap man

    5)
I think that it is better now that oliver is living with Fagin and his boys because he is actually being treated with respect and can eat some real food. Even though oliver is now a thief I would say it is much better than living with Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry because he was abused quite a bit over with them.

Poor people are attracted to go live in the capital city like London because there are many rich people there that can help out them there. They can get food and water like they never would get when they where in the poor houses. The bad thing is that it is a long walk because most people aren't able to have horses and things like that. This is something that many people do and it helps so people but hurts some others.

    1. Something that attracts poor people to London is that it can give them a fresh start on life, giving them a chance to start over and find a better job that they can make money to provide for their families. The disadvantages to living in London is that pickpocketing was very popular so people would often have their money or goods be stolen.

    2. John Dawkins acquired the name "The Artful Dodger?" because he was very skillful in pickpocketing, he is also the leader of Fagin’s gang of child criminals.

    3. ”What was Oliver's horror and alarm as he stood a few paces off, looking on with his eyelids as wide open as they would possibly go, to see the Dodger plunge his hand into the old gentleman's pocket, and draw from thence a handkerchief!” I decided to pick this quote to describe the Dodger because it shows how talented he is in the art of pickpocketing.

    4. Oliver thought that The Artful Dodger was kinda strange. Oliver though Fagin was an extremely cheap man.

    5. I think it is better for Oliver to live with Fagin and his boys because he is actually being treated like a human and being treated with more respect than he has ever gotten before. Even though living with Fagin has turned Oliver into a thief it is a much better lifestyle than Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry because he was constantly abused while living with them.

    1) Poor people get attracted to go live in large and successful cities such as London because they feel like there are many, many opportunities for them and they might get a chance to find a job or make some sort of money. The job opportunities are a huge advantage but the disadvantages of moving to a city while being a poor person is the risk you must take, you might not be able to find a job right away and there might be some crime of problems you might get wound up in.

    2) John Dawkins got his nickname because a dodger means someone who pickpockets which is what John does, artful means graceful and talented. Knowing that John can pickpocket people very well and he’s very slick at it probably gave him the name.

    3) Artful Dodger - “A friend's just an enemy in disguise. You can't trust anybody.” I chose this quote because it showed how he doesn’t trust anyone at all and how he’s a heartless person because he doesn’t believe in friendship.
Fagin - “What do you watch me for? Why are you awake? What have you seen? Speak out, boy! Quick—quick! for your life.” This quote shows how much patience he has and that he can be very demanding and ill tempered at times.
Brownlow - “but I am not sure that this boy actually took the handkerchief” This gives out the point that he is a very truthful man and even if he has an opportunity such as this to gain things he still doesn’t choose to do it because its not correct.

    4) Oliver’s first impressions of Artful Dodger is that he found the Dodger as an interesting young boy who he felt was nice enough to follow and trust to an extent.
Oliver's first impression of Fagin was that he was a very polite gentleman who is nothing like men Oliver had to deal with in the past.
When Oliver first met Brownlow he was very scared of him after he was accused of stealing his things and had to go somewhere else for the case to continue.
When Oliver met Grimwig he wasn’t really fond of him like he was with Brownlow, that was mainly because Grimwig wasn’t fond of Oliver at all either, he was judging Oliver because he looked poor in his eyes.

5)I think Oliver would be better off with living with Fagin because the only reason he was caught after the other two boys stole stuff was that he was used to being severely punish if he thought to do crime such as that. If he stayed with them he might’ve gotten more used to it and would've been more comfortable being a part of it. Here he won’t get picked on, beaten and he would be in a proper family environment eventually.
