Due Monday, March 25th - "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens - Chapters I - V

Directions:  Please read Chapters 1-5 of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. In a blog response, consider the following characters: Mr. Bumble, Mrs. Mann, Mrs. Sowerberry, Noah Claypole. Choose one of the aforementioned characters and defend why you think he/she is the most cruel. Use direct quotations from the text in order to make you argument. Use evidence to prove why your choice is the most cruel, and use examples to prove why the others are not as cruel. Read your fellow classmates’ responses. Have a dialogue about their ideas. Finish your blog response with a guess as to what will happen to Oliver next. Again, use evidence from the text to back-up your theory.

I think that the most cruel and worst person in Chapters 1-5 in Oliver Twist is Mrs. Mann. She is a horrible caretaker and all of the kids are scared of her. Oliver flinches when she puts her fist up and is terrified of her. She doesn’t spend the money she gets for the kids and instead uses it for her own personal benefit. She also lies to Mr. Bumble about everything. Mr. Bumble doesn’t know anything about the kid’s suffering because Mrs. Mann lies about it. She is the most cruel. I think Oliver will suffer more from his new owners since they are also pretty cruel.

From what I’ve read I think Mr. Bumble is the cruelest person we’ve met so far. Throughout the chapters, you could see the horrible way he takes care of Oliver and the terrifying way he tortures him by telling him what he’ll do to him if Oliver doesn't obey to his orders. He forces him to be happy when it’s clear that the young, small boy is trembling in fear and with that, he threatens him. “There the boy remained, with a palpitating heart, for half an hour… [Mr. Bumble] put on a grin and a threatening look, and added in a low voice, ‘Mind what I told you, you young rascal!’ (43)”. He has traumatized the child so much with the small time span he’s been with him. “[Oliver] had carefully kept himself out of sight during the interview, and who was shaking from head to foot at the mere recollection of the sound of Mr. Bumble’s voice (61)”. When Mr. Bumble came by to visit the undertaker Oliver was hiding and so frightened by just the sound of the man’s voice. I am going to predict that throughout the rest of the story Oliver will continue to get mistreated. “Charlotte, bursting into a heavy laugh, in which she was joined by Noah (58)”. Maybe the people who pick on him more might start to be Charlotte and Noah based of where the last chapter ended off with the two of them by the fireplace after ordering Oliver to eat the leftover food in the corner of the room where it’s the chilliest.

I think Mrs. Mann is the cruelest. She is not only cruel to Oliver but all the children that are under her care. She spends all the money she gets and barely gives the children any food. She gives them unfair punishments as she did with Oliver and two other kids when the complained about being and she lies to Mr. Bumble about how her establishment is being run and how the kids are cared for. I think Mrs. Mann is crueler than the others because she is not only hurting Oliver but the other kids suffering under her treatment at the workhouse. “He caught sight of Mrs. Mann, who had gotten behind the beadle's chair, and he was shaking her fist at him with a furious countenance,” she is obviously abusive to Oliver and the other kids. In my opinion, she is the cruelest.

I think Mrs. Mann is the most cruel to Oliver. She does not take care of the children in her workhouse, as 8 1/2 out of 10 children die in her workhouse. Instead of using the money she gets to feed the children, she spends it on herself. As Mr. Bumble has Oliver come to his workhouse, Oliver looks back at Mrs. Mann, who was shaking her fists at him. It scares him because "the fist had been too often impressed upon his body". Mrs. Mann physically abuses Oliver and threatens him a lot.

In "Oliver Twist" Mrs.Mann is the "care taker" for the children at the work house. Though she does feed him it is the bare minimum. She pays them 7 pence which is barely enough to get bread and she spends all of her money on alcohol to feed her addiction. The worse thing she does is beat the children this is provided when Mrs.Mann "Mrs. Mann, who had got behind the beadle's chair, and was shaking her fist at him with a furious countenance." I think she is the worst for all of these reason.

Mr Bumble is the most harmful to the children he berates them with insults and puts them through labor. He is oblivious to the fact to what he is doing to the children.“The master aimed a blow at Oliver's head with the ladle; pinioned him in his arm; and shrieked aloud for the beadle." Here he rages at Oliver for wanting because of his starvation.

I personally think that the worst character towards Oliver Twist was Mrs.Mann. I think that Mrs.Mann was the most nasty person in general because she treated the orphans terribly and she basically only saw them as dollar signs. She practically starved the children and never cared about their condition and if they ever asked for more food they would be punished "and he was keeping it in the coal-cellar with a select party of two other young gentleman, who, after participating with him in a sound thrashing, had been locked up for atrociously presuming to be hungry". What I believe will happen next is that Oliver will be tormented more by his new owners because he didn't seem to like working in the grave yard "Pretty well, thank you, sir' replied Oliver, with considerable hesitation. 'Not very much, sir".

In my opinion I think Mr. Bumble is the most cruel to Oliver Twist. The reason I think this is because of the way he treated Oliver and how he would tell him what he would if he didn’t listen to him. “The master aimed a blow at Oliver's head with the ladle; pinioned him in his arm; and shrieked aloud for the beadle." Mr. Bumble was angry at Oliver only because he wanted food and was starving.

The worst is Mr Bumble because he is the most harmful to the children, beating them with hard labor and insulting them. He is oblivious to the fact to what he is doing to the children.“The master aimed a blow at Oliver's head with the ladle; pinioned him in his arm; and shrieked aloud for the beadle." Here he rages at Oliver for wanting more food because of his starvation.

Mrs. Mann - The superintendent of the juvenile workhouse where Oliver is raised. Mrs. Mann physically abuses and half-starves the children in her care. She tries to make Oliver look well fed and clean. She acts like a kissup "Goodness graces is that you mr bumble sir?" Also raising her fist saying ill beat you if you go. she will lose money is twist leaves.

Mr. Bumble is the most cruel character in Oliver Twist. One reason he is cruel is also in his name, Bumbledom, who he is named after, is the self-importance of a bureaucrat. Mr. Bumble is often seen threatening and bullying Oliver, especially after he asks him for more gruel. “What have paupers to do with soul or spirit either? It’s quite enough that we let’ em have bodies.” (7.32). Mr. Bumble, in this quote, explains why it’s better to keep paupers half-starved. Mr. Bumble thinks a lot of his power over these orphans in his parish, so much that he thinks that he controls their bodies, souls, and spirits. I think Mr. Bumble is crueler than the other characters because he is not only hurting Oliver but the other kids suffering under his treatment at the workhouse. I think that in the next chapter Charlotte and Noah will start to pick on Oliver more, because of where chapter five ended.

Mr. Bumble is the cruelest character in Oliver Twist. Mr. Bumble is seen as threatening and bully’s Oliver, especially after telling Oliver to do something right or he will be punished badly. “Oliver promised to obey: the rather as Mr. Bumble threw in a gentle hint, that if he failed in either particular, there was no telling what would be done to him. (page 43)” Mr. Bumble gets away with a lot in the orphanage and how he takes care of the children there. When he is with the kids he is very assertive, hardcore and terrifying towards the kids. However, when he is in the magistrate he is very kind and tells the gentlemen that everything is fine and that the children are taken very well care of. That's why I think Mr. Bumble is so far the cruelest character because he hurts children and gets away with it. I think that further in the story we will see Charlotte and Noah Claypole pick on Oliver, because of how they treated him when they saw him in the kitchen.

Mr. Bumble is someone who has worked in these factories for a long time. He must know how things go, regardless of what he does and how to get what he wants out of the system. He should not be a person who works with kids under any circumstance, because he doesn't care about them at all. I would say he is tied with Mrs. Mann for the most cruel but he has one more factor that makes him horrible. He is a person of high authority in the factories, far above Mrs. Mann, yet he does nothing about the injustice and is a part of the corruption himself. He constantly ignores olivers needs and makes him wrong when he is simply fighting for survival.

Mrs. Mann Mrs. Mann was almost the worst character. She worked with the youngest children, yet thought about their needs the least. She would beat the children, and hardly even let them talk freely. “Oliver was about to say that he would go along… when… he caught sight of Mrs. Mann, who had got behind the beadle’s chair, and was shaking her fist at him with a furious countenance.” Mrs. Mann had also only 20c per child to feed them, yet still used a large amount for her own paycheck, which practically starved the children.

Mrs. Sowerberry is going to be somebody like cinderella's mom to oliver. She is going to make oliver work so hard, and be doing none of the work herself while spending loads o money on silly things. I can see that because her husband is constantly trying to make sure she is happy and being at her beckon call all the time, whereas she just complains about every little thing. This will make Olivers life very annoying and difficult, but I don't think it's as cruel as the other things the characters are doing to oliver, seeing as she does not hurt him physically or mentally.

Although I can see Noah Claypole becoming a serious bully to Oliver, He is just a spoiled teenager who has been brought up in a non-child friendly environment by parents who endorse violence and rude behaviour. He is not of much prestige, he is only a charity boy, but seeing oliver below him gives him a power surge. “‘I’m Mister Noah Claypole,’ said the charity-boy, ‘and you’re under me. Take down the shutters, yer idle young ruffian!” He will probably bully oliver for no reason other than he can, which does sound pretty cruel, but not so much if you compare it to the other characters he knows because he has only the power to kick oliver around and harass him which he was used to already.

I think that Mr.bumble was the worst of them all. He was so mean and cruel to Oliver. They really so him in the book as a really bad man. He was very mad at Oliver after he ask for more that he even sold him off which is just crazy. He had got so mad even though Oliver was just asking for more of the gruel that was basically just water. He is an awful person and is depicted as a cruel and mean person in this novel

I think the cruelest person is Mrs. Mann because she views the children as her tool for making money. She is a terrible person caretaker, she gives the children just enough food to keep breathing. “she knew what is good for children, and she had a very accurate perception of what was good for herself.” She receives Oliver just because she will get seven pence-halfpenny for each child per week. This money worth per week is a good round diet for a child, but she keeps most of the money for herself.

I think that Mr. Bumble is the worst one because out of all the characters he is the most harmful to the children. What i mean by harmful to children is that he would beat them with hard labor and insult them. “The master aimed a blow at Oliver's head with the ladle; pinioned him in his arm; and shrieked aloud for the beadle." Here he screams at Oliver for wanting more food because he was starving.
