Due Monday, January 7th - Romeo & Juliet - Act I, scene i

Directions: Please reread Act I, scene i of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Choose 1-2 major passages from the play and comment on the ideas, philosophy, and/or the motivations of the characters as well as the impact on the plot of the play. For example, what are the comedic elements in the play? How is Shakespeare using humor to prepare us for the tragedy about to ensue? How does Shakespeare use dramatic irony in the play? What is going on in the mind of Romeo? How does Shakespeare use foil characters? Tybalt and Benvolio?

In the part 1 of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet he makes many comedic jokes that are sometimes sexual and also not up to date. His joke make it seem as though the play is a comedy but it is actually a tragedy. He has a way of making us feel like everything will be ok but in the end you know that they will die. He is very good at making it seem as though we are watching a comedy and not a tragedy.

In Act 1,scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses a lot of comedic and inappropriate jokes. He made jokes that were pretty vulgar. I think this act was to mainly show the rivalry between the Capulets and Montagues. Even the servants are involved. It also introduces some of the most important characters and shows how much power some of the characters have. You notice that a lot of the dialogue are actually in sonnet form. Also there is foreshadowing and irony only because Shakespeare told us the ending in the Prologue. One example of irony in act 1, scene 1 is the fact that Romeo is stuck on a girl who is a nun, but in the end we know he falls in love with another girl, Juliet.

In Romeo and Juliette Shakespeare uses comedy to portray the play as a comedy rather than a tragedy, he uses many jokes to help illustrate the feud between the two families and show that the rivalry is so intense that even the servants are involved with it. An example of dramatic irony in the play is that the audience is aware that Romeo and Juliette will fall in love and later die but no one else involved is aware of the tragic elements of the play.

In Act 1, scene i, Shakespeare uses comedy to portray the feud of the families. When the Capulet servants start a fight with Montague servants, over a "accidental" thumb bitting, Shakespeare uses comedy to show how quickly everything escalated because of the families hatred for each other. The dramatic irony is that we already know that the families foolish feud killed Romeo and Juliet in the end.

In Act 1, scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespear uses comedy and dramatic irony in the play. In the beginning, there are these two guys talking about wanting start a fight with two guys who just walked in. Throughout that part, Shakespeare puts in some jokes to make the scene seem more entertaining to the audience when watching. When the Capulet servants start a fight with Montague servants about thumb biting, Shakespeare uses comedy to make the scene less serious. Romeo is upset that the love of his life doesn't love him back. The way Shakespeare wrote Romeo's feelings through what sounds like a poem. The dramatic irony is that Romeo will end up with someone else, which we know will be Juliet, but he thinks that he will never get over his love for Rosaline.

In scene 1 of the of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses comedy to express a tragedy. He writes in a very different style than many other poets, this is why he is very unique. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony, for example Romeo will end up with Juliet in the end. Even though it is a tragedy he tries to use comedy to make the scenes seem not as tragic.

In Act 1, Scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet Shakespear puts some comedy during the argument and battle that was already going on between the two families. While the characters were shouting at each other there were saying some funny phrases trying to insult and mock the other. After this battle was cut off short by the king the book went to focus on what was going on with Romeo who had his heart broken by a girl who did not love him back. The irony in this was that while Romeo was talking to his cousin who was wanting to know what made Romeo so sad Romeo said many things along the lines of how he’s never going to fall in love again. Also that she had to be the one and no other girl could do the same. And while he was saying these ironic statements his cousin disagreed and assured him that he’ll fall in love with someone else later on and that there are more girls out there who can be like her. Though Romeo then ironically disagreed with him once again.

In Act I, scene I of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespear uses a lot of comedy and dramatic irony in the play. Shakespear uses comedy at the beginning of the book where he shows Sampson and Gregory making remarks about physically conquering Montague men and sexually conquering Montague women. Not only comedy but he also uses dramatic irony, Romeo talks to his cousin about never finding love again, and that Rosaline is the only one for him and there is no one else like her, although the readers know that this is not true. Shakespear uses foil characters by helping readers recognize and understand the traits, attributes, and motivations of other characters. For example Tybalt and Benvolio, Tybalt is aggressive impulsive and concerned with family honor/status, and Benvolio is calm and wants to stop the violence.

    Prince
    Rebellious subjects, enemies to peace,
    Profaners of this neighbor-stained steel—
Will they not hear?—What ho, you men, you beasts!
That quench the fire of your pernicious rage
With purple fountains issuing from your veins—
On pain of torture, from those bloody hands
Throw your mistempered weapons to the ground,
And hear the sentence of your moved prince.
Three civil brawls, bred of an airy word,
By thee, old Capulet, and Montague,
Have thrice disturb’d the quiet of our streets,
    And made Verona’s ancient citizens
Cast by their grave beseeming ornaments
To wield old partisans, in hands as old,
    Cank’red with peace, to part your cank’red hate;
If ever you disturb our streets again
Your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace.
For this time all the rest depart away.
You, Capulet, shall go along with me,
And, Montague, come you this afternoon,
To know our farther pleasure in this case,
To old Free-town, our common judgment-place.
Once more, on pain of death, all men depart.

The price is telling the capulets and the montagues to stop fighting each other and if they fight to not fight on the streets so nobody gets hurt and so they can stop disturbing the peace because they are tired of hearing them fight and they want peace.

In Act i, scene i a massive fight breaks out in the streets between the Montagues and the Capulets. This causes a grave problem between them. This grasps the attention of the audience immediately. When Romeo enters afterward he seems so depressed and Shakespeare proceeds to grasp the attention of the audience by saying he was in love with someone he wasn't allowed to. There is also foreshadowing of him meeting a new love(Juliet).

In the first act of Romeo and Juliet, we start from the conversation of two servants from Capulet. From their conversation, we can see the enmity between the two families and how militant they are. It also helps introduce the following story and the harbinger of the tragedy. After the fight, we see Romeo is grieving for a girl. He thinks that he will never forget her and no one can replace her. But we, as the audiences know that he will fell in love with Juliet and died for her.

  13. In act 1 scene 1 Shakespeare uses a lot of dark humor. The main scene of dark humor is when the scene starts with two guards discussing what they would do to the other families servants if they were to see them. The scene also shows the rivalry between the two families the Montagues and Capulets because eventually the rival servants show up which leads to a big fight in the court yard that is eventually stopped by the prince. After the battle everyone is worried about where Romeo is. Romeo during this scene is very upset about how his only one true love has left him and he thinks that he will never be loved again. The irony of this scene is that romeo does find love. Shakespeare uses Benvolio and Tybalt as foils caraters because while Tybalt wants to fight while Benvolio tries o stop the fight.

This quote sums up what we had learned in the scene before it. It also does a good job confirming how deep the hatred between these two families is, that even the servants would get themselves involved. In saying all of this to his masters, Benvolio is pinning the blame on tybalt, and trying to make himself look more innocent. This section is a good introduction to some of the support characters. It shows tybalt being rowdy and wanting to fight. It also shows benvolio trying, and failing, to stop the fight and acting self righteous of his job trying to break it up. This also has some comedic elements, as we see Benvolio trying to keep his reputation with his family, but in reality he also joined in on the fight after tybalt provoked him a bit. The foil characters demonstrated in this part were Tybalt and Benvolio, because as i said, one was tying to stop the fight and one made it worse.
