  1. Why do you think Prometheus foresees a struggle with his collectivist world? Why does he think he will prove more powerful than opposing forces? I think Prometheus will prevail because there a lot of people like him that are different. These people could help Prometheus in his conquest to prevail.Like for example Prometheus is smarter than most people. Prometheus feels that people should be able to live how they want with minimal consequences and they don't have to be judged because of their abilities or differences.

Prometheus feels god like because he feels enlightened

We do not want to live in a theocracy. We should maintain that barrier and government has no business telling someone what they ought to believe or how they should conduct their private lives.

Sugary drinks are blamed for increasing the rates of chronic disease and obesity in America. Yet efforts to reduce their consumption through taxes or other measures have gone nowhere. The beverage industry has spent millions defeating them.

The curious thing is Americans don't mind individual mandates when they come in the form of payroll taxes to buy mandatory public insurance. In fact, that's the system we call Social Security and Medicare, and both are so popular politicians dare not touch them.

The reason why Prometheus foresees a struggle with his collectivist world because he knows some people are afraid to hear the truth or won’t believe him. Those people don't know anything but that group/place. They might not want to participate with Prometheus plan or understand it. “And if there were a contest, and he had to compete in measuring the shadows with the prisoners who had never moved out of the cave, while his sight was still weak, and before his eyes had become steady would he not be ridiculous?”(paragraph 32). Same with Allegory of a Cave, The man doesn't see what the enlightened person sees as right. That's what Prometheus is afraid would happen however he is confident that it won't.

Prometheus think he will be victorious because he knows he isn't the only enlightened person there. He knows that some of his brothers were like him: an individual. “We were born with a curse. It has always driven us to thoughts which are forbidden. It has always given us wishes which men may not wish. We know that we are evil, but there is no will in us and no power to resist it. This is our wonder and our secret fear, that we know and do not resist.”(page 18). Even though Prometheus knows that the men there might not agree with him or follow him, he still believes that there are people like him.

I think Prometheus or Equality forsees a struggle with his collectivist world because he feels like he has more knowledge to be more of an individual than a group. He is scared that he will be the odd one out and everyone will be against him at first. That’s why at the end he changes his vocabulary from “We” to “I” when he finds his true identity. Also he leaves his “brothers” at the end because he feels like he could journey alone now. He thinks he will prevail because he knows there are more like him out there. More people that are enlightened have the same amount of knowledge as him. He knows there are more people out there that know what it’s like to be an
    individual.

1.“I owe nothing to my brothers, nor do I gather debts from them.”(PART 11)
2.“My hands... My spirit... My sky... My forest... This earth of mine.... What must I say besides? These are the words. This is the answer.”(PART 11)
3."Are you afraid?"But they shook their head. So we walked to the door, and we threw it open, and we stepped together into the house of the Unmentionable Times.”
4.“We stood together for a long time. And we were frightened that we had lived for twenty-one years and had never known what joy is possible to men. Then we said:‘"Our dearest one. Fear nothing of the forest. There is no danger in solitude. We have no need of our brothers. Let us forget their good and our evil, let us forget all things save that we are together and that there is joy as a bond between us. Give us your hand. Look ahead. It is our own world, Golden One, a strange, unknown world, but our own."’(PART 10)
5.”We, Equality 7-2521, have discovered a new power of nature. And we have discovered it alone, and we alone are to know it.”(PART 3)
6.”We made it. We created it. We brought it forth from the night of the ages. We alone. Our hands. Our mind. Ours alone and only.”(PART 5)
7.Still, without reason, as we stood there by the hedge, we felt our lips drawn tight with hatred, a sudden hatred for all our brother men. And the Golden One saw it and smiled slowly, and there was in their smile the first sadness we had seen in them. We think that in the wisdom of women the Golden One had understood more than we can understand.(PART 2)
8.”But I am done with this creed of corruption.”
9.”I am done with the monster of "We," the word of serfdom, of plunder, of misery, falsehood and shame.”
10.”We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever."

Prometheus foresees a struggle with his collectivist world because he has become enlightened of everything that his community has not been exposed too. Prometheus also knows that informing his community will cause many different opinions some good or bad.

Prometheus thinks that he will prevail because he is confident and optimistic. Prometheus feels like he has more knowledge than his brothers and the Council of Scholars and that when his brothers see how Prometheus lives as an individual, his brothers will want to join him.

    1. Allegory of a cave:

1.) “And when he remembered his old habitation, and the wisdom of the cave and his fellow-prisoners, do you not suppose that he would felicitate himself on the change, and pity them?”

2.) “At first, when any of them is liberated and compelled suddenly to stand up and turn his neck round and walk and look towards the light, he will suffer sharp pains”

      Anthem:

3.) It was when I read the first of the books I found in my house that I saw the word "I." And when I understood this word, the book fell from my hands, and I wept, I who had never known tears. I wept in deliverance and in pity for all mankind. (ch.12)

4.) And I wish I had the power to tell them that the despair of their hearts was not to be final, and their night was not without hope. For the battle they lost can never be lost. For that which they died to save can never perish. (ch.12)

      The soul of the Individualist:

5.) “Thousands of years ago, the first man discovered how to make fire. He was probably burned at the stake he had taught his brothers to light. He was considered an evildoer who had dealt with a demon mankind dreaded.”

6.) “Their goals differed, but they all had this in common: that the step was first, the road new, the vision unborrowed, and the response they received- hatred.”

7.) “No creator was prompted by a desire to serve his brothers, for his brothers rejected the gift he offered and that gift destroyed the slothful routine of their lives.”

8.) “Man cannot survive except through his mind. He comes on earth unharmed. His brain is his only weapon.”

      Robert Reich (brainy quote):

9.) “Yes, the rich will find ways to avoid paying more taxes, courtesy of clever accountants and tax attorneys.” (The Council)

10.) “Standing up to the bullies is the hallmark of a civilized society.”

11.) “Average working people need more fresh starts.”

12.) “Can we please agree that in the real world, corporations exist for one purpose and one purpose only - to make as much money as possible, which means cutting costs as much as possible?”

I think that Prometheus foresees a struggle with the collectivist world because he is more intelligent and is more thoughtful than anyone else in his society. He thinks he will prevail because he thinks that some people will follow his lead once he starts his journey to be free. He thinks he will become victorious because he sees himself more as a leader and an individual. Prometheus also thinks that there are other enlightened people, rather than just him. One struggle he may have is that a lot of people have power in his community that are not on his side.

“And when he remembered his old habitation, and the wisdom of the cave and his fellow-prisoners, do you not suppose that he would felicitate himself on the change, and pity them?” (Allegory of a cave)

I think the prisoners don’t try to escape because of their Collectivist nature. Since the prisoners were raised according to collectivist views, they feel that they need to be punished. It's like a toddler being put in timeout, they know the corner their consequence because that's what their parents have taught them. It also connects to Inequality for All, 1980 is when inequality began to get worse and nobody did anything, people noticed but they went along with it.

“It was easy to escape from the Palace of Corrective Detention. The locks are old on the doors and there are no guards about. There is no reason to have guards, for men have never defied the Councils so far as to escape from whatever place they were ordered to be.”

“You won’t need a whip- he’ll bring it to you and ask to be whipped.”

“Before the rise of the nation-state, between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, the world was mostly tribal. Tribes were united by language, religion, blood, and belief. They feared other tribes and often warred against them.”

“Can you rule a thinking man”

“The only way to grow the economy in a way that benefits the bottom 90 percent is to change the structure of the economy. At the least, this requires stronger unions and a higher minimum wage.”

“Freedom is the one value conservatives place above all others, yet time and again, their ideal of freedom ignores the growing imbalance of power in our society that's eroding the freedoms of most people.”

"We shall not report our find to the City Council. We shall not report it to any men. They raised their hands to their ears, for never had they heard such words as these.”

“Nations are becoming less relevant in a world where everyone and everything is interconnected. The connections that matter most are again becoming more personal.”

Everything I said is contained in a single word...collectivism…. To act together. To think-together. To feel-together.”

“A society - any society - is defined as a set of mutual benefits and duties embodied most visibly in public institutions: public schools, public libraries, public transportation, public hospitals, public parks, public museums, public recreation, public universities, and so on.”

  7. The people in the prison don't realise that they are even in prison. Also people realise that there is a problem but they don't do anything about it because they don't want to go against the group. They don't want to fight the power. They don't want a long fight. He realises that it is very easy to get out of the prison.

We never used to blink at taking a leadership role in the world. And we understood leadership often required something other than drones and bombs. We accepted global leadership not just for humanitarian reasons, but also because it was in our own best interest. We knew we couldn't isolate ourselves from trouble. There was no place to hide.

The reason why people don't break out of prison was because they accept it. They have been taught their whole life what is right and what's completely wrong so if someone breaks a rule, they would accept their punishment and not regrets it. They accept their mistake and accepts the fact that they need to pay their price. They also don’t know another way, if they are said they need to be in the prison for that amount of time they will listen to that. They don't think staying in the prison is really a problem, the people told them to do it and they’ll follow, like how they obey every other thing that is instructed to them. It’s like they don't know that there's another option they don't know there’s a thing called breaking out. They could also just be scared to try anything that might cause more trouble for them.

It was easy to escape from the Palace of Corrective Detention. The locks are old on the doors and there are no guards about. There is no reason to have guards, for men have never defied the Councils so far as to escape from whatever place they were ordered to be. (part 6)

  10. Prompt 1: Near the end of the story, Prometheus writes that “the day will come when I shall . . . raze the cities of the enslaved” and that “the Councils of my brothers will be impotent against me.” Why do you think Prometheus foresees a struggle with his collectivist world? Why does he think he will prevail? For your essay, consider also what Ayn Rand writes in this excerpt from her novel The Fountainhead, titled “The Soul of an Individualist.” Also, use examples from Inequality for All by Robert Reich as a means of showing modern day examples.

I think That Prometheus foresees a struggle with his collectivist world because the people that he is trying to enlight will not believe him and they also might not want to believe him. Also everyone else isn't very intelligent so they might not be able to comprehend what he is telling them. I think that prometheus thinks that he will prevail because he thinks he is smart enough to be able to convince everyone what the truth actually is. Also I think that he thinks that he will prevail because he believes that there are other people in the society who are like him and know that there is something wrong with their society.

    “ I am. I think. I will” (part 11). (Anthem)

“for the first time this day, we remembered that we are the Damned. We remembered it, and we laughed”. (part 8). (Anthem)

“Perhaps, later, some men had been born with the mind and the courage to recover these things which were lost; perhaps these men came before the Councils of Scholars. ” (part 12) (Anthem)

“Standing up to bullies is the hallmark of a civilized society”. (Robert Reich)

“Public fear isn't something to be played with” (Robert Reich)

“An agreement reached by a group of men is only a compromise or an average drawn upon many individual thoughts.” (Soul of an individualist)

“To them, I said, the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images.”(paragraph 13). (Allegory of a Cave)

“And the day will come when I shall break all the chains of the earth, and raze the cities of the enslaved, and my home will become the capital of a world where each man will be free to exist for his own sake”. (part 12) (Anthem)

“Perhaps, in those days, there were a few among men, a few of clear sight and clean soul, who refused to surrender that word”. (part 12) (anthem)

The reason why no one has escaped prison is because they just accept being put into prison. They were born into thinking that what they did was wrong, and that the people above them have 0 flaws. They do not question the authority of the higher ups.

  13. Prometheus foresees a struggle with his collectivist world because he knows that his brothers will not accept it at first. (the Allegory of the Cave) They might be afraid to fight against the system and the government. People don’t think their life is bad , they don’t want to change and they don’t even think of changing. The government and the one who has power will fight against him, they will use their power (law) to block Prometheus and his idea.(he can’t spread it) The government might punish Prometheus’ followers to terrorized people who want to follow him.
Prometheus thinks he will prevail because he has confident, he thinks he is right. Although there will be a harsh fight but he thinks no one likes to live as a prisoner. There will be a huge change in people’s life, but people will get used to it just like the man in the “Allegory of the Cave”. Once they get used to it, they will see the benefits of this new way of thinking and life.

“ if any one tried to loose another and lead him up to the light, let them only catch the offender, and they would put him to death.”(the Allegory of the cave)

“At first, when any of them is liberated and compelled suddenly to stand up and turn his neck round and walk and look towards the light, he will suffer sharp pains; the glare will distress him, and he will be unable to see the realities of which in his former state he had seen the shadows”(the Allegory of the Cave)

“Thousands of years ago, the first man discovered how to make fire. He was considered an evildoer who had dealt with a demon mankind dreaded.”(The Soul of an Individualist)

“His vision, his strength, his courage came from his own spirits. A man’s spirits, however, is his self. That entity which is his consciousness. To think, to feel, to judge, to act are functions of the ego.” (The Soul of an Individual)

“Yes, the rich will find ways to avoid paying more taxes, courtesy of clever accountants and tax attorneys.” (The Council)

“We were born with a curse. It has always driven us to thoughts which are forbidden. It has always given us wishes which men may not wish.
