ReplyDeleteEquality thinks that the council is blind because he found a new power of nature and the council doesn't care what he says and doesn't listen to him. Equality gave liberty the name the golden one one because she is the one he likes and respects the most and when they work they see them working in the sun and they think that they are special because they are women. Equality wanted to give out the light to everybody so they could see at night and use it while they were working so they could see better. Equality was put in the place of correction detention because when they asked him where they were he said that he was not going to tell them.

ReplyDeleteWhy does Equality think that the Council of Scholars is blind?
Equality thinks the council of scholars are blind because they don't see the secrets of the earth and they think all of the things about earth are known by all of the people. “The secret of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them”.
What name has Equality given to Liberty? Why?
Equality has gaven liberty the name of The Golden One because she has gold hair.
“We have given you a name Liberty 5-3000. What is our name they asked? The Golden One.”
What did Equality intend to do with his discovery?
Equality intended to show his discovery to the World Council of Scholars and then become a scholar. “We shall go to this consul and we shall lay before them, our gift, the glass box with the power of the sky”.
Why was Equality put in the Palace of Corrective Detention?
Equality was put in the Palace of Corrective Actions because he was so consumed by the light that he was late in returning to the home of the street sweepers. Then the Council of the home asked where he was, but he would not answer.” take our brother Equality 7-2521 to the Palace of Corrective Detention”.

DeleteHey Michael! Just a thought but, why do you think that they name the people in the book names like 'Liberty' and 'Equality' Liberty means: the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, and Equality means: the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities. Is there a common theme? I feel like the names the characters in this book are called convey unity and collectivity. Do you?

ReplyDeleteEquality thinks the Council of Scholars is blind after he discovered how lightning is created. He thinks they are blind because they don’t see the secrets of the Earth and they think all the things known about Earth are known to all.”But we think that the Council of Scholars is blind”The name Equality has given to Liberty is “The Golden One” because she has golden hair.”
The World Council of Scholars is an elected body of the wisest men in all parts of the world. The meeting is significant because its members only meet once a year.Equality was put in the Palace of Corrective Detention because he was so consumed by the light that he was late in returning to the home of the street sweepers. The Council of the home asked where he was, but he would not answer.”How dared you think that your mind held greater wisdom than the minds of your brothers?”
Michael DiCenzo
DeleteI agree that the meeting is significant because its members only meet once a year and it is a big thing when the members meet.

ReplyDeleteChapter III Why does Equality think that the Council of Scholars is blind?
He thinks that the council of scholars is blind Because they are not allowed to see all the secrets of the world. This is shown on Pg 52 “The secreats of the earth is not for all men to see”. Equality is obviously wrong because they could not read if they were blind>
Chapter IV What name has Equality given to Liberty? Why?
Equality gave her the name the golden one. This is shown on Pg 55 “What is our name?’’ they asked. “The Golden One”. Equality gave her this name because she has golden hair.Chapter V What did Equality intend to do with his discovery?
Equality wanted to make everything brighter with his new discovery a light bulb and to show everyone so they can advance quicker with light. This is show on Pg 60 “We must bring it to the sight of men. We need all our time, we need the work rooms of the home of the Scholars, we want the help of our brother Scholars and their wisdom joined to ours”.
Chapter VI Why did Equality not try to escape earlier?
Equality did not try to escape the corrective detention center earlier because he needed time to heal after being beaten. It is shown on Pg 67 “Our body is healthy and strength returns to it speedily”. Also he had no reason to leave until the day before he would be sent to the world council of scholars which is shown on Pg 66 “we knew that we must escape for tomorrow The World Council of Scholars is to meet in our city”.

DeleteNice explanation Jacob, I personally thought that Equality called Liberty'The Golden One' because the met in the sun. It was the part in the book that they covered their eyes to secretly greet each other, but the others thought that they were just blocking their eyes from the sun.

ReplyDeleteCh III.
In chapter three of Ayn Rand’s book Anthem Equality thinks that the Scholars are blind. “No one can possess greater wisdom than the many Scholars who are elected...Yet we can. We do.” (pg. 54). Equality thinks that the Scholars do not know about the great things he has discovered, Equality thinks that he should teach the Scholars and that they should learn about what he discovered together. Ever since Equality opened the body of the dead frog, he is not obeying any rules, and committing many crimes. Some of the crimes that he is committing are The Transgression of Preference, writing in his journal, physical and mental differences, and he conducts scientific discoveries and many more transgression.
Ch. IV.
Liberty has given Equality the name ‘The Golden One’ that name is very appropriate in my point of view. Equality named Liberty ‘The Golden One’ because that's how Equality and Liberty first met. “We moved our hand to our forehead and moved it slowly...Towards Liberty 5-3000. Had the others had seen it...For it had only looked as if we were shading our eyes from the sun.” (pg.40). Each day Liberty and Equality greet each other but putting their hands to their forehead (as if to protect their eyes from the sun), but no men can suspect them using that to greet each other. Equality first met Liberty in the sun which is why he calls her ‘The Golden One.’
Ch. V.
Equality wants to know what he looks like because he wishes it was possible to see the likeness of his own person. “For it is evil to have concern for their own face or bodies.” (pg. 62). Equality knows that it is a crime to wonder what he looks like. In Anthem men never see their own faces and never ask their brothers, so there is no point in knowing what you look like. But that night, for no reason, Equality wants to know what he looks like.
Ch. VI
Equality did not try to escape earlier because he was waiting for his body to gain strength, and waiting for the World Council of Scholars to come. “Then, tonight, we knew that we must escape. For tomorrow the World Council of Scholars is to meet in our city.” (pg. 66) I know this because Equality knew that there are no guards in the Place of Corrective Detention because no men have ever defied the Councils so far as to escape.

DeleteI thought that was interesting too, but what if Equality saw himself but didn't like what he saw?

ReplyDeleteWhy does Equality think that the Council of Scholars is blind?
They do not view his invention of electricity and light as a life changing event to society.
What name has Equality given to Liberty? Why?
The golden one because she has blonde hair.
Why now does Equality feel the need to guard his tunnel?
He dose want it to be found or destroyed.
Why was Equality put in the Palace of Corrective Detention?
because he was so consumed by the light that he was late in returning to the home of the street sweepers. The Council of the home asked where he was, but he would not answer.
Yasmiin Ali
ReplyDeleteIn chapter III, Equality discovered a new power of nature. However, the Council of Scholars said that what they know exits and what they don't know doesn’t. “No one can process greater wisdom than the many Scholars who are elected my all mentor their wisdom...”(page 54). Equality thought that the Scholars knew everything and now he realizes that they don't. Equality discovered something so amazing that he wants to show to scholars thinking that they don't know what it is.
In chapter IV, Equality tells Liberty that he has given her a name, which is the Golden One. He named her that because of how they first met each other. It was a bright sunny day, “, for it looked only as if we were shading our eyes from the sun...”(page 40). They did that each day to greet each other. The other men didn’t suspect anything because of that.
In chapter V, Scholars are chosen by the people for their wisdom. The World Council of Scholars is people around the world, chosen and brought to a meeting once a year. This is significant because they meet once a year to talk about what has happened in their cities and how to make it better. “There is so much work ahead for all of us, for all the Scholars of the world…”(page 60). The Scholars are the people who decide how to run the place and make the rules, that's why Equality wants to show them his work.
In chapter VI, Equality ran out of time and didn't even notice it. He tried to get to the Theater but it was too dark, so he went to the Home of the Street Sweepers. However, he got caught and got questioned. The Palace of Corrective Detention has no windows, two men covering their faces, and had a lash. “‘Take our brother Equality 7-2521 to the Palace of Corrective Detention. Lah them until they tell’...”(page 64). Equality didn't tell, then what he was working on until the day The World Council of Scholars meeting.

DeleteNice Yasmiin! I thought that the reason Equality named her 'The Golden One' was really interesting too!

ReplyDeleteEquality thinks the Council of Scholars is blind because he thinks they are ignorant. “The Council of Scholars has said that we all know the things which exist and therefore the things which are not known by all do not exist.” Equality believes that some things go beyond the knowledge of the Council. He also doesn’t believe that what the Council of Scholars doesn’t know about doesn’t exist, like his own discovery. But we don’t really know if what the Council says about their knowledge is true.
Liberty had given Equality the name “The Unconquered” because he has not been conquered by the Government or the laws. He doesn’t care very much about getting caught as long as he can talk to Liberty and I think she caught on to that. “They looked straight into our eyes and they held their head high and they answered: The Unconquered.” Liberty seemed very proud to give Equality that name. I think it is appropriate for him because he isn’t conquered by fear or the Government anymore.
Equality feels the need to guard his tunnel because he thinks if someone finds his discovery, they would not understand it or believe him. “For should any men save the Scholars learn of our secret, they would not understand it, nor would they believe us.” Equality thinks they would destroy him and his light, then goes on to say he doesn’t care about his body, only his light. But changes his beliefs about himself and decides he does care about his body and I also think that's where the need to see himself comes from because he is feeling empowered about this great discovery and empowered about himself.
Equality was able to escape from the palace because the locks on the doors were very old and there were no guards. “The locks are old on the doors and there are no guards about.” The Council trusts that men will be loyal and never try to escape their punishment in the palace. Equality needed to escape so suddenly because the World Council of Scholars was coming the next day. “Tomorrow...we shall take our box...and walk through the streets to the Home of the Scholar.” Equality is planning on showing his discovery to the Council for praise and a seat on the Council. He is also planning on giving them his confessions, which are his writings.

ReplyDeleteChapter III:
Why does Equality think that the Council of Scholars is blind?
Equality thinks that the Council of Scholars is blind because they can see things that he can and they can not see the secrets of the earth. “ But we think that the Council of Scholars is blind. The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see” (52).
Chapter IV:
What name has Equality given to Liberty? Why?
Equality has given Liberty the name “ The Golden one”, “ We have given you a name in our thoughts, Liberty 5-3000.
“What is our name?” they asked. “The Golden One” (55). Equality has given Liberty this name because that’s how they got to know each other.
Chapter V:
Why does Equality want, for the first time, to know what he looks like?
Equality wants to know what he looks like because he wonders about his abilities. He sees himself as an individual as he sees the differences of him and his brother. “We stretch out our arms. For the first time do we know how strong our arms are. And a strange thought comes to us: we wonder, for the first time in our life, what we look like” (61).
Chapter VI:
Why was Equality put in the Palace of Corrective Detention?
Equality was put in the Palace of Corrective Detention because he wouldn’t tell them why he was late to the home of the street sweepers. “So when the oldest of them asked us: “Where have you been?’’...
“We will not tell you” (63).

ReplyDeleteWhat has Equality discovered and what has he learned from it?
CH 3- During this chapter Equality discovers the amazing powers of electricity. While exploring an underground tunnel Equalities curiosity gets the best of him and decides to open boxes he found. In these boxes are wires, light bulbs and many other assortments. Equality is fascinated but also frightened by the objects. He starts to question why his society has never been introduced to this sort of technology and learns how much his society has been incorrectly teaching him about life.
What name has Liberty given to Equality? Do you think that the name is appropriate? Why or why not?
CH 4- During this chapter Equality is given the name “the Unconquered.” I think this is a very appropriate name for him and his personality. In this book he goes through the trouble of finding out who he really is and what his society is with no one standing in his way.
What did Equality intend to do with his discovery?
CH5- During this chapter Equality takes his findings from the tunnel and makes a working light bulb which is just a box of glass that resembles a lightbulb. Equality is so excited by his invention he even comes up with the idea to show it to his society and light up his town.
Why was Equality put in the Palace of Corrective Detention?
CH6- During this chapter Equality is put into detention in the palace of correction for being late to the home street sweepers. While working on his invention the light bulb he is put into detention where he is whipped and beaten until he tells them where he has been.

Why does Equality think that the Council of Scholars is blind?
The reason why Equality thought the Council of Scholars is blind is that he was seeing something that seemed so easy to find. So realizing that the Council of Scholars never found anything about this at all made him see them as being blind because they were somewhat obvious. This would have been something that would’ve been able to find if they “had sight” because this affects their rules so much (in a bad way). “The secrets of this earth are not for all man to see, but only for those who seek them (52)”. Sadly in the real world, some peoples don't have sight. So maybe Equality sees the world that he’s living very similar to that. Only certain people get to see, in this case, what Equality is seeing, the rest are blind (to it).
IV
What name has Liberty given to Equality? Do you think that the name is appropriate? Why or why not?
The name that Liberty has given to Equality was “The Unconquered (56)”. I think this name was appropriate for Equality because the government and Council haven’t gotten him to follow their system yet unlike the others. “What care we if we must travel it alone! (54)”. This makes him seem unconquered in Liberty’s eyes. He was still been breaking the rules and going his own way and she’s seen it herself self because that’s how they met, breaking one of the rules. He hasn’t followed the system even after the people tried so he was never defeated, never conquered.
V
Why does Equality feel the need to guard his tunnel?
Equality feels the need to guard his tunnel because in there he has too many secrets so if anyone finds out about it not only would his discovery get leaked to so many people. “For should any men save the Scholars learn of our secret (61)”. Making him lose the chance of ever going to the World of Council of Scholars to try to get in the council of scholars. They would try to break whatever he has made because that would be against the rules because it was only Equality himself who thought of it and also built it. “They would destroy us and our light (61)”. He then would also probably get killed by them as well for breaking so many rules, just like the man who spoke the unspoken word once. They get killed by the people who live there for not following the system.
VI
Why was he able to escape from the Palace, and why was it suddenly necessary to escape?
Equality was able to escape from the Palace very easily due to the weak system they have kept for it. “The locks are odd on the doors and there are no guards about (67)”. It was suddenly necessary for Equality to escape then before due to him keeping track of how many days he has been in there he knew that tomorrow was when the World of Council of Scholars are going to meet in the city. Equality must be there to shows all his brothers and everyone all of his secrets. To show that the system they are doing isn’t the best one there is.

ReplyDeleteWhy does Equality think that the Council of Scholars is blind?
“ The Council of Scholars has says that we know all the things which exist and therefore the things which are knows by all do not exist.” (p54) Equality believes that they can’t see all the secrets of the earth but the Council of Scholars thought they did, so Equality thinks that they are blind. I think Equality thinks they are foolish, they think that those scholars have narrow views.
What name has Liberty given to Equality? Do you think that the name is appropriate? Why or why not?
Liberty named equality as “The Unconquered”. I think this name is appropriate because he has his own ideas and he dared to fight against what he didn’t agree with. He dared to break the laws and talk to Liberty. Liberty thinks he is special and unconquered.
Why does Equality want, for the first time, to know what he looks like?
“We stretch out our arms. For the first time so we know how strong our arm are.” The success of the “lamp” makes him proud of himself. And he finds that he is different than his brothers.
Why was he able to escape from the Palace, and why was it suddenly necessary to escape? Equality is able to escape from the Palace because the locks are old on the doors and there are no guards. “There is no reason to have guards, for men have never defied the Council so far as to escape from whatever place they were order to be.”(p67) It was suddenly necessary to escape because World Council of Scholar is going to have a meeting tomorrow. Equality decides to show the lamp to the World Council Scholar so they can maybe understand him and they might absolve him of his crimes. He can’t escape earlier or later because if he escapes too early then people will find out that he is missing and he won’t get a chance to get into the meeting.
Nick Entner
ReplyDeleteHe thinks the Council of Scholars are blind because the only think about the big picture and they don't think about anything besides themselves. He thinks that they are awful people who control everything. He says that the scholars have the most wisdom but they also are not good are blind because they don't think of problems that could have. They just have tunnel vision.
Liberty gives the name The Unconquered to Equality. I think that this is an appropriate name for him. I think this because he still does these things that are against the rules. Aslo he still has the same emotions and is free from the society because he is smart. He is not taken over by these people he just lives free like nothing happened.
He intended to discover A light bulb to make everything brighter. This made it so that he was able to see many thing throughout the time period. He wanted to see more. He is very curious. He just wants to learn and find more about things that he has never learned about. I would do the same if I were him.
He treated the palance with disrespect because they were very bad people. He was very unhappy with what they were doing. He was very unhappy. This was a big turning point in the book. I thought that he did the right thing.
Jillian Boyer
DeleteI agree with your thoughts on why Liberty called Equality the unconquered, i also thought it was amazing that she picked up on his differences so early in their knowing each other, because she mentioned she had called him that for a long time.
Griffin Littlewood
ReplyDeleteWhat has Equality discovered and what has he learned from it?
What Equality discovers is electricity he performs many experiments with the new power. His curiosity increases as he experiments. He concludes that this is the power of the sky. '' We Equality 7-2521, have discovered a new power of nature.''(Pg 52). This quote shows there reaction of discovering this power.
What name has Equality given to Liberty? Why?
Equality names Liberty ''The Golden One''(pg 55). Equality names her this because of her scorn for the world. It seems to be somewhat sarcastic.
What did Equality plan to do with his discovery?
Equality plans to share his discovery with the Scholars of their community. He planned to do this to show the power of his discovery. ''In a month the World Council of Scholars is to meet in our cities.''(60). This explains how he plans to tell his leaders.
How was Equality treated in the palace?
Equality was sent to the palace after he told the council about his discovery. Then, he was treated very poorly. He was terribly beaten and whipped.''Take our brother Equality 7-2521 to the Palace of Corrective Detention. Lash them until they tell.''(pg 64). This quote shows how he was beaten and tortured for not telling where he found his discovery.

ReplyDeleteChap. 3
Equality discovered electricity and realized that it was possible to know more than the Council of Scholars. Equality thought that "no single one can possess greater wisdom than the many scholars who are elected by all men for their wisdom."(54)
Chap. 4
Liberty gave Equality the name "The Unconquered".
Chap. 5
Equality intended to present his discovery to the World Council of Scholars and become a Scholar. He believed that "they will see, understand and forgive. For our gift is greater than our transgression."(61)
Chap. 6
Equality escaped because the doors had weak locks and there were no guards because nobody had "defied the Councils so far as to escape from whatever place they were ordered to be."(67)

ReplyDeletechapter 3- In chapter three equality discovers electricity. He performed experiments with electricity and drew up many '' We Equality 7-2521, have discovered a new power of nature.''(Pg 52). This showed that he was so interested in what he just found.
chapter 4- In chapter four the name equality gives liberty, ''The Golden One''(pg 55). She was named this because of her sarcastic attitude and scorn being.
chapter 5- In chapter five Equality decides to take what he found from the tunnel and make a working light bulb, which is just a box of glass that resembles a lightbulb. Equality is proud of his "invention" to the World Councils of Scholars and hopefully become a Scholar himself.
chapter 6- After equality told the council about his invention he was sent to the palace. In the palace he was treated very poorly He was beat and whipped and was treated like he was nothing. ''Take our brother Equality 7-2521 to the Palace of Corrective Detention. Lash them until they tell.''(pg 64). This quote shows how Equality didn't share his discovery earlier and didn't tell the council how he discovered it.
Jillian Boyer
ReplyDeleteEquality believes that the council is blind because they claim that they know everything, and that if there is something they don't know, that is only because it doesn’t exist. Unknown to Equality the council does know more than they let on, not everything, but they must tell the people such things don't exist in order to keep peace and equality. Equality believes, “The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them.”
Equality has yet again given Liberty 5-3000 another name. In this chapter he revealed to her that he calls her ‘The Golden One’ but he also said another name to her. He called her his dearest. “Our dearest one, do not obey us.”
The world council of scholars is probably the top of the top of scholars from all over, and they are probably smartest of all the scholars. This must be why Equality wants to meet with them, he believes only they will be able to understand his new power.
