Overview: We have come to the end of our initial analysis of Ayn Rand’s cautionary tale, Anthem as well as Robert Reich’s documentary Inequality of All. Each warns its audience of a problem staring them in the face, and how they are manipulated by a system. Ironically, both have traditionally been aligned with opposite sides of the political spectrum, Reich as a Democrat and Rand as a Republican. However, let’s look beyond party politics and think for ourselves. Both champion individual thought and reason. Both believe we need to go beyond groupthink and look at the facts. Thinking for yourself is key. Do not passively believe what is fed by the government, media outlets, school, peers, or other forms of hearsay. Even the work we did in this unit. Do not take my word. Study. Explore.

"I am. I think. I will" What is the significance of those words to you? Explain fully.
ReplyDeleteThe significance of those words to me is there all personal words. There also significant because the words mean that you yourself can control.
2. Explain what Equality means by the creed of corruption?
creed is a guide used to affect someone's action or actions. creed of corruption means the rules of the city are told in a way that corrupts the people.
3. What did Equality learn about slavery and freedom? Why did men give up their freedom once they earned it? Equality learned about freedom and once they earned it they first enslaved by god, king's, birth, kins and then race. freedom is a right and does not need to be earned
4. Discuss any three of the precepts which Equality adopts as his guide to life? Do you see any similarity between them and the thoughts of Robert Reich in Inequality for All? Explore. I see similarities between Robert Reich and Equality were they both are different Equality is smarter than most people and Robert Reich is smaller than most people.
5. Now that you finished both works, what kind of action could you take in order to be an authentic self? To make an impact on the economic crisis? Again, who knows if this will be part of your final essay? Don't let anyone judge you and others change your perspective on things.

DeleteGood job Mike! I agree that when he started using "I" it was the turning point of the book
1."I am. I think. I will" What is the significance of those words to you? Explain fully.
ReplyDelete''I am'' is who you truly are and your individuality as a person. ''I think'' means you have your own thoughts and own ideas about what you want. ''I will'' this represents that I will not let someone else put their will on me. I use only my will. ''I am a man. This miracle of me is mine to own and keep, and mine to guard, and mine to use, and mine to kneel before!''(pg 95).
2. Explain what Equality means by the creed of corruption?
This means that he is done with the word ''We''. Here he is referring to how "we" or the group should not control you the individual. He is explaining how "we" is cursed. He thinks that a groups moral is not as important as his own and he is the captain of his own ship.''I am done with the monster of ''We'', the word of serfdom, of plunder, of misery, falsehood and shame.''(pg 97)
3. What did Equality learn about slavery and freedom? Why did men give up their freedom once they earned it?
Equality learned that he was enslaved by his own people/race. He learned that his own kin put him in shackles and that he had ripped them free. His freedom was given up by the word ''We'' constraining him until he found "I". "He was enslaved by his birth, his kin, by his race."(pg 101)
4. Discuss any three of the precepts which Equality adopts as his guide to life? Do you see any similarity between them and the thoughts of Robert Reich in Inequality for All?
The first precept is how Equality wanted everyone to have their independence/individuality. This is similar to how Robert Reich believed in capitalism which is based off of individuality and independence. Another precept was Equality wanted to discover(Electricity). He wanted to express his individuality and no one wanted to believe. Robert Reich saw our problems financially leading into 2008 and, like Equalities community, no one believed him. One last precept is individuality. Equality was a good writer and he liked this unique thing about himself but he was rejected. Robert Reich was also rejected for being different because he is very short. ''I owe nothing to my brothers''(pg 96) This quote represents his freedom.
5. Now that you finished both works, what kind of action could you take in order to be an authentic self? To make an impact on the economic crisis?
The action I could take to be my authentic self would be to have confidence in my thoughts and ideas. This could lead to becoming a good student and go to a good college. I could this self confidence and education to build a business from my ideas some day. This business could help the economy by creating jobs, adding to people's personal wealth and creating money for taxes. ''I have found the engine which produced this light.''(pg 100)

ReplyDelete1. the significance of those words are not the easiest to explain as what he says in those last chapters he says he will teach his son the word "I" and teach him how to use it. then he says he will make a fence around his home using a wire net and putting electricity so people can't pass his "brothers" as he says referring to his friends. Then he says he will bring his friends here to live freely without being punished for different ideas.
2. what he means of the creed of destruction is his old "so called" home. He says this because any idea any has that the council says that it will replace the people who make the candle referring to the light bulb or they will punish some one for breaking a rule that is human nature referring someone can't think to much wicht was Prometheus was doing.
3. He learned that slavery was a horrible thing and was wrong to do but when he talked about freedom he says that it was difficult to obtain for the people of slavery. But they go back because how people treated slaves once they were free since it was hard to find a job or a home.
4. The percepts he adopts is that he will live by growing his own food finding his own food to eat. He will raise his "son" as an individual and teach the ways to survive on his own. he will protect his home and treat his wife and "son" equality.
5. the actions I would take to be an authentic self by doing what I would enjoy like helping out in the garden and my dad's gas station. But as I grow up I want to learn how to survive off the land and not be depending on people or things to give me food or supplies. But I will never know if I will follow what I plan to do later in life. This is because we will never keep all promises we make or that we will stay on track since everybody changes but there mind will always think differently when we see a challenge that we think that we can't succeed. From my life experience my parents tell me always try new things and try to do difficult things and succeed at them.

ReplyDelete1. The significance of those words to me show when Equality finally understands what its like to be one. For Equality whole life he had to be with a group and now finally he figures out a word that defines only him. “Many words have been granted me, and some are wise, and some are false, but only three are holy: ‘I will it’...” (page 95). The Unspeakable word that Equality has been wondering about was ‘I’. The reason why this is so important is that Equality is curious and thoughtful. So when he started reading and writing it opened a floodgate in his mind.
2. In Equality’s eyes, the word ‘We’ is a terrible thing. To him ‘We’ means being controlled, and having no freedom. “What is my life, if I am but to bow, to agree and to obey?”(page 97). So what Equality means by the creed of corruption is that he doesn't want anyone to be controlled and live in a life that he did and instead be an individual.
3. Equality learned that he was enslaved by his people. He realized that he was living in a place where people were told what to do and if they disobeyed they would be punished. “But what is freedom? Freedom of what? There is nothing to take a mans freedom away from him, save other men…”(page 101). Equality read of a hero that was enslaved again and again. However, he helped people realize freedom in the process.
4. The first precepts Equality adopts as his guide to life is teaching individuality and one's self. Equality realizes how important it is to know ones true self an that you should think for yourself and not others. He also doesn't want others to feel like a “We,” he wants people to feel like a “Me.” Another precept was his journey of self. Equality always referred to as “We” in previous chapters. However recently he started learning the words ‘I’, ‘my’, and ‘me’. Once he did, he couldn't stop using it, because he realized what he has been wanting since the lightbox. The last precept is Electricity. When Equality found out that he can create electricity from wires he felt like he can help the Council/world stop using candles. He also felt like an individual by figuring it out by himself. “To be free, a man must be free of his brothers. That is freedom. This and nothing else…”(page 101).
5. What I would do now to be my authentic self is to try things I would try before. For example, do a sport or take a higher class. I would also showcase myself more in class like raising my hand and joining in class conversations. That would really help me in college. Also just having more confidence in what I do rather than push it away. “But he broke their chains…”(page 101).

ReplyDelete“I am. I think. I will” The significance of those words are that Equality said this when he began to think of himself as an individual. "My hands...My spirit...My sky...My forest...This earth of mine..." (pg. 94) this quote Equality beginning to think of himself as an individual. When equality finds out the meaning of 'I,' he becomes enlightened, just as in the book 'The Allegory of The Cave.' Before, Equality thought of never thought of himself as an individual he thought of himself as one with his brothers. 'I am' means that equality thinks of himself as an independent person (without the need of his brothers). 'I think' means that Equality can think whatever he wishes without worrying about punishment from The Scholars. 'I will' means that he can do whatever he pleases and 'he will' do whatever he pleases because now Equality has a new sense of freedom that he is curious to explore.
When Equality says 'Creed of Corruption' he is talking about the word 'We.' Creed of Corruption means that The home of Scholars is taking control of everyone which makes them corrupt. Creed means faith or belief. I think Equality used the word 'Creed' because the Home of Scholars is trying to spread their belief (ex: getting rid of everything from the Unmentionable Times) to the new generation. Corruption means dishonest or false conducted by those in power. I think Equality used the word 'Corruption' because the Home of Scholars is spreading fake, false information (ex: no such thing as 'I' and no identity of self for anyone) to everyone else. "The word "We" is as a lime poured over men." (pg. 97)
Equality learned that gods enslaved men first (slavery). The reason that Equality named himself "Prometheus" is because he now wants to help "unlock" those slaves. "And he suffered his deed as all bearers of light must suffer. His name was Prometheus." (pg. 99) Equality learned that he had theoretically been "enslaved" because he was kept alone, and had lost his freedom of choice and action. I think that men gave up their freedom once they earned it because they didn't feel accustomed to the new sense of freedom. These men have never experienced freedom before so learning about freedom was overwhelming.
The three percepts that Equality adopts as his guide to life are his quote "I am. I think. I will." The first precept is "I am." Equality is himself; he is independent. Equality does not like collectiveness anymore, and he believes it is best for people to be their self and own person. The second precept is "I think." Equality can think anything he pleases now because no one is there to monitor him and he can have curious thoughts now, that he could not have had when he was younger. The third precept is "I will." this is Equality's freedom to do anything he wants or wishes. I see similarities between the two because Equality intends to help the 'un-enlightened' ones and Robert Reich wants to help the working middle class. These two are both enlightened figures that want to share their knowledge with others.
An action that I could take to become an authentic self is by being trustworthy and genuine. I think that most people don't understand that to become authentic you should first stop lying. In the media, there is a bunch of lies and fake news, and for this generation, there isn't anybody to trust anymore. People don't like to become friends with someone who is a liar. Showing people that your trustworthy and genuine does everyone a favor if you have a business and trying to get someone to invest in your company the person will most likely choose you if you are trustworthy and genuine. Being Trustworthy and genuine makes an impact on the economic crisis because genuine people are most likely to be fair (to the middle class) which is a big issue in the financial crisis right now.

ReplyDelete"I am. I think. I will" What is the significance of those words to you? Explain fully.
I think these words mean that you are your true self and nobody can change you and you are an individual. You control your actions and whatever you do. “ I am a man. This miracle of me is mine to own and keep, and mine to guard, and mine to use, and mine to kneel before” (95).
2. Explain what Equality means by the creed of corruption?
I think Equality is referring to the word “we” because he is talking about a group of people and not just himself as an individual. He likes to use “i” now because he can do things on his own now he doesn’t need help from his brothers and sisters. “ I am done with the monster of “We”, the word of serfdom, of plunder, of misery, falsehood and shame” (97).
3. What did Equality learn about slavery and freedom? Why did men give up their freedom once they earned it?
Equality learned that a man was enslaved by by the gods, then by the kings, then his birth, then his kin, then his race, ‘At first, man was enslaved by the gods. But he broke their chains. Then he was enslaved by the kings. But he broke their chains. He was enslaved by his birth, by his skin, by his race” (101). Men gave up their freedom because they knew that it couldn’t be taken from them.
4. Discuss any three of the precepts which Equality adopts as his guide to life? Do you see any similarity between them and the thoughts of Robert Reich in Inequality for All? Explore.
One precept Equality has is he wanted everyone to be independent. This is like how Robert Reich expressed individuality.
5. Now that you finished both works, what kind of action could you take in order to be an authentic self? To make an impact on the economic crisis?
Something I would do in order to become an authentic self would to get involved more, whether it’s a class discussion or community service and many more. I feel like this would help in the long run and as I get older.

ReplyDeleteThe significance of Equality saying “I am. I think. I will,” is that he knows the word I. He has finally figured out a way to express himself without to associate with others. “My hands… My spirit… My sky… My forest… This earth of mine.” Equality is now liberated that he can speak as an individual.
By saying “creed of corruption” Equality is done with being told what to think and believe. When he says “what is my life, if I am to bow, agree and obey?" he is asking, what is the point of living when you can only be a follower, always having to be guided or controlled by someone else. He doesn’t want to be a "We" anymore, he just wants to be able to live his own life.
Equality learned the history of slavery, and about the men fought to get it. “He declared to all his brothers that a man has rights neither god nor king nor other men can take away from him. ” He came to the conclusion that freedom was man’s right, and that no higher power could ever take it away. Equality suggested that men lost their freedom when they accepted the worship word of “We”, and that happened during the Great Rebirth.
Equality adopts the percept of being an individual. He realizes that guide to life is living it as your own person, “I shall live my own truth.” He wants to live his life as his authentic self or truthfully. That means to him being an individual, raising his son, rebuilding the achievements of that past, which is another one of his precepts. I do see some similarities between Equality thoughts and Reich's thoughts. One of them being wanting to bring back the achievements of the past, which to Equality means bringing back the Unmentionable Times and to Reich means bringing back a time when inequality was very low. But I don’t see them being very similar when it comes to being an individual, I think Equalities a lot more focused on it than Reich is.
I think by being an individual and being completely yourself is the guide to getting to your authentic self. Equality brings us a really good point which is that you have to live your life truly to be your authentic self. I think to make an impact on the economic crises, you have to know your facts and be aware of the situation. I didn’t know what inequality was before watching the documentary, but now that I understand it, I feel like I can make much more of an impact. I think understanding the problem is the first step in really fixing it.

ReplyDeleteThe importance of equality using the words I am, I think, I will is that he never got to think for himself before. He never got to use the word I before so he is using it now and he is going to teach it to other people. Equality means that the council corrupted the minds of others and he wants to fix that problem so everyone can be happy and free. People gave up their freedom once they earned it because they did not know what to do with it because they have been slaves for so long. When equality went out into the world for the first time he found things he had never seen before and he explores new things. To be an authentic self I would explore new things not be stuck in with a big group and not share ideas. I would try to help the economic crisis by donating what a can at different times.
The words “I am. I think. I will are significant because that was turning point of the book. Where Equality figured everything out and now recognized himself as an “I” instead of a “they” or “we”. He used it proudly in the last few pages of the book. Another reason it’s significant is because describes the whole resolution of the book. Everyone could not be themselves at the time the book took place. But finally Equality and many others, could now be themselves, have their own names. They figured everything out.
ReplyDeleteCreed is a guide used to change someone's actions. Creed of corruption is when the rules of his city are told in a way that corrupts the people in the city.
First men were enslaved by the gods but broke their chains then enslaved by the kings but broke their chains and enslaved by birth, kin and his race. To be free a man must be free of his brothers. They gave of their freedom once they earned it because all they knew was slavery?
"And we shall join our hands when we wish, or walk alone when we so desire..." Equality believes that coming together as a whole is beneficial, but the individual also earned alone time. He believes that not all things should be done as a group. This is similar to the thoughts of transcendentalists because they believed society corrupted an individual's purity. They believe that true communities can only be formed when there are real individuals that comprise the community. Inequality for all and Anthem are very similar. They both have the belief that something is very unequal. In Anthem, society is very unfair, because no one can have their own thoughts and opinions. In Inequality for All’s case, the money distribution is unfair in Robert Reich’s opinion.
In order to be my “Authentic Self”. I would stray away from being in the common crowd and do what I want. I would express my opinion more like Equality even it means bending the rules of the time if they limited my abilities. Equality is a good example of doing something for the greater good and being very different at the same time. He strayed away from the common crowd and wanted to find what was wrong with the world.

ReplyDelete1. For me those three statements kinda show the meaning of oneself. “I am” means who you are as a individual, “I think” means what you believe in, your what you put your mind to, not everyone need to believe some you do to prove that it’s true, “I will” means what your think you should do, your choices and where you want to go. “This, my body and spirit (94).” That’s what those words mean to me, they are about myself, and only about myself.
2. I think Equality means the word “we” when he mentions the creed of corruption. It’s just that now not only did he stop using that word to refer to himself, he finds that word evil. “ This word must never be placed first within man’s soul, else it becomes a monster, the root of all the evils on earth, the root of man’s torture by men, and of an unspeakable lie (97).” He realised how the Council of Scholars made that word take away everyone identity, it took away people's option to live as an individual. He now sees the word “we” just like how they see the word “I”.
3. Equality realized that him and his brother were unknowingly enslaved by the people of that town. They forced him and the others to obey they rules and laws and to do exactly like how they ask you to. And if you don't then there will be punishments. “The achievements which are open to me, but are closed forever to my brother, for their minds are shackled to the weakest and dullest ones among them (100).” This all sounds like the life that slave might have to live. Only realizing what actual freedom was made Equality realized that because at first when he was in the town it seemed normal for him just like the rest of them.
4. The precepts which Equality adopts as his guide to life was to make his own choices when it come to about anything in this case, where he wants to go, what he wants to say, who he wants to talk too. He also now addressed to himself as an individual not a “we” anymore, he learned the Unspeakable Word and the few other words that follow along with it and the power that these words bring “This god, this one word: “I” (97).”, he found out the many things the people back in town were trying to keep away from him.
5. I think one of the biggest actions I could take in to be an authentic self is to take part in conversations more, not only in class but in general as well. I always find myself wanting to say something in a conversation but not raising my hand or making a move. Trying to stop this could help me break that habit of not choosing to talk even when I can and take that chance and be a part of it. This could really help me express who I am which is something I always want to do.

I think Equality is referring to the word “we” because he is talking about a group of people and not just himself. He likes to use “i” now

1. "I am. I think. I will" What is the significance of those words to you? Explain fully.
The significant of those words for me is that everyone can change this world. Although the first person who stand out and give the idea might be punished. People may not accept your idea and think you are crazy. Even though you were punished, your idea will stay in people’s mind. Once they find out the truth, they will agree with your idea. One by one, you will have more and more followers. At last, when there are enough followers, the crowd will follow. None of them want to be the “special one”. A great example is Nicolaus Copernicus, he came up with the idea of geocentric theory. This theory angered the pope and Copernicus was burned to death. But now, everyone knows that sun is in the middle of the Solar System.
2. Explain what Equality means by the creed of corruption?
The government is trying to control their people by brainwashing and mind control. They limit people’s thinking, and force them to think less. People who work for government were the foolish, someone who was successfully brainwashed. A wise man is never appreciated and a foolish man is in charge.
3. What did Equality learn about slavery and freedom? Why did men give up their freedom once they earned it?
Men give up their freedom because of the worship of the word “We”. Equality learns that freedom has nothing wrong, it’s a right which should not be take away. Before they earned it, they got tired of obeying their boss, were jealous of those who were born wise, were jealous of those who were born rich. They think that is unfair and they want to make everyone equal.
4. Discuss any three of the precepts which Equality adopts as his guide to life? Do you see any similarity between them and the thoughts of Robert Reich in Inequality for All? Explore. You may have to write an essay comparing the two.
The three of the precepts are “not all work should be done as a group”;“being in a group is good”; “individual earn time to be alone”. Robert Reich think inequality is fine but if the economic gap between the poor and the rich is too wide, inequality will become a problem.
5. Now that you finished both works, what kind of action could you take in order to be an authentic self? To make an impact on the economic crisis? Again, who knows if this will be part of your final essay?
To be a authentic self, you don’t have to do your work in a group all time. If everyone play their strength, work will done easier and faster. China is a great example of it. Fifty years ago, we were communist country. People work as a farmer together and share the food and wealth. Scholars has the lowest social position, even lower than servants. They are seen as the useless. Mao Zedong burn down books, induces students attack rich landowners to control people’s mind. In those years, Chinese civilization has gone a lot backward. People had no food and the whole country was poor. After 1982, the reform and opening up policy, the government more focus on education and encourage people open factories in China. The economy of China increased and people’s life got a lot better, more and more people had a chance to do what they are good at and have a better life.

ReplyDelete“I am, I think, I will” shows when equality breaks free of being equal and realizes what these people have been doing all this time. He is now realizing what it means to be different and what it means to free. He was enlightened about all the things that he hadn't known. He was finally free from all of the terrible things that happen in the community.
He means that when things are created they will be put into something very unhappy and sad that no one wants to be in. People will be born into something terrible. Something of hate and this place has no meaning.
Equality learned that slavery is a terrible thing and freedom is something that people in slavery never got. Slavery is a terrible thing that happened many years ago. People need to know what slavery is. Freedom is something that you have not something that should be gained.
He needs to always be free and should always have something different from anyone else. Everyone has to be different and has to have their own person. People have to be different and have differences.
I could treat everyone with respect and treat everyone equally. Having everyone being the same is bad and this should not happen. I will need to make sure that people will always be different and this will never happen to us. This is a terrible thing that could happen.

ReplyDelete“I am. I think. I will.” for Equality, those words are the answer. Those words are what he has been looking for his whole life, and the solution to all his questions. “Are we wrong and bad for being smarter than our brothers?’’ No. I am better being smarter than my brothers. “Do we think that something might be wrong with our community? Yes, I know my community is horrible. And for the reader, it puts in perspective someone who doesn’t even have the most basic right we have as humans, to have ourselves. Looking through Equality’s perspective gives us a chance to look at our own individuality, and how lucky we are to have it.
When equality figured out himself, and his surroundings, and all of the truth that his community had hid from him, he came to a conclusion. That he was a slave, in his old home, and now he has found freedom. When he thinks back to his old life, he is so confused by other people in history. He is confused by how they could possibly throw away their freedom, and volunteer themselves to slavery. I believe that people essentially only do what brings the most joy, the most profit, and the least consequence. Nobody likes homework, but we do it anyways because it will make our grades better, and if we don't we will face a consequence. The positives overrun the negatives so we do it. With a choice as big as your freedom, t would take a lot of positives to make you give up your freedom, but it isnt impossible. As someone who hasnt been faced with such a great force of positivity and as someone who directly came from an absense of freedom, this concept is absolutely beyond him.

ReplyDelete1) The significance of those words are that Prometheus is saying the forbidden word "I" and finally thinking about himself.
2) The "Creed of Corruption" is the word we and groups that is controlled by the government to put them in groups and say that they are not special. The government is saying they are like everyone nothing different.
3) Equality sees that slavery is not saying people are different, but slavery is because people are forced to be the same with everyone else and not being special in anyway.
4) Equality believes that coming together as a whole is beneficial, but the individual also earned alone time. He also believes that not all things should be done in a group. The last precept is that society poisons a persons individuals self. I really don't know how this relates to Reich because either than doing somethings in a group sometimes he is the opposite. Reich says we must all in a group save our economy not by one individual but by many.
5) I could help the economic problem by getting into politics more but do I really want to like I don't want to become a mindless person just going with a group but the problem runs deeper than me and everyone. You can not fix the problem because if you try more problems with come up.
