Liberty does not want to be on equalities brothers because she has no desire go against the law to be a man that is younger than her. He has confronted her and said “ you are beautiful, Liberty 5-3000.” This brought shock to them and they asked him his name and he said “equality 7-2521.” They then said “You are not one of our brothers.” They don’t want this because they don’t want to be against the law with a boy underaged.

    1. Equality is afraid of the Uncharted Forest because the forest has not been explored and there are many unknowns about this forest. They said “they wish to not think of it.” The forest is dark and scary and there is nothing there that they no of. So they are scared if they go in something will hurt them. They are also scared that something will come out and attack there place.

Would you agree that in real life liberty probably would not want to be equality's brother because of the age difference even with no aw against it?

I agree that she would not want to be related because she have a big age difference

  2. When Equality says “they” He is talking about a girl named Anthem 5-3000 .Anthem is a girl that Equality took notice of. She works the soil and lives in the Home of the Peasants beyond the city. They met while he was working on the streets. The “time of mating” is when there is one time in the spring when men older than 20 and women older than 18 are sent to the City of Mating, and create offspring. Equality thinks it’s shameful because in his time it wasn’t very accepted but more of a necessity to continue their existence. It is also a law that you cannot think of woman in that way making it more shameful.”but it is an ugly and shameful matter, of which we do not like to think”(pg 41).

Who is Liberty and what does she do?

“Liberty 5-3000” is a woman who meets Equality while he is working on the streets. Liberty works in the fields and she speaks to Equality even though it's against the rules.”Then they asked what is your name? Equality 7-2521”. They also give each other special names which is also against the rules.”We had broken so many laws, and today we have broken one more. Today, we spoke to the Golden One”

Why is Equality afraid of the Uncharted Forest?

Equality is afraid of the Uncharted forest because no one has ever returned from there. “Men enter the uncharted forest, for there is no power to explore it and no path to lead among its ancient rees which stand as guards of fearful secrets”.

Liberty is like the leader of the women. Everybody thinks she is beautiful and everyone respects her and thinks of her as a great person. "Thus, each day, we greet Liberty 5-3000, and they answer, and no men can suspect". The men greet her with a smile and she smiles back and they don't talk back to her. They view liberty as a goddess even though everybody has to be equal but somehow all the men and women view her as high class.

In Anthem the Unspeakable work is the letter “I”. It is lost to this worlds language and for anyone who speaks it the punishment is death. I feel like this one single word has changed the society and destroyed any sign of individuality. The Unmentionable times where the times before this society. The times where there was Individuality and personality. This world has seemed to forget these times and leave it behind.

Equality is afraid of the Uncharted forest because there are legends of the forest that say that men run into the forest with no reason at all and die. For example “One among the men of the city escape alone and run to the uncharted forest, without call or reason These men do not return. They perish from hunger and from the claws of wild beasts which roam the forest” Pg 48. He is also scared because the Uncharted forest is a place where the cities of the unmentionable times used to be.

The unmentinable times were basically the times before the great rebirth. In the story the unmentinable times was told as a bad time to everyone and that there was only evil everyehere before the great rebirth. For example “Great mountains of flame stood in the squares of the cities for three months. Then came the great rebirth” Pg 49. I personally think that the government took over and made everybody equal and the unmentinable times was just the normal world.

    2. Seeing as Equality is slowly opening up to other ways of thinking other than how the government is telling him, do you think maybe he isn't so much scared of the cities from the unmentionable times, but curious?

In the book Anthem when people come to an age they get sent to a city to mate. Equality thinks this is shameful because having sex with someone is supposed to be special. In the book they make them mate like animals, no connection at all.

In Anthem children in equality's society are raised to be the same as one another. They cannot be better than anyone. If you are smart and people see that they put you in a job that is easy and takes no brain power.

The punishment for speaking the Unspeakable Word is being burned alive in the square of the City. When people talk of this Unspeakable Word, they are put to death very brutally. The people in the square of the city tear out their tongues so that they cannot speak of anything anymore. “They had torn out the tongue of the Transgressor so that they could speak no longer...”(pg. 50). The people also chain their bodies to a stake. “As the chains were wound over their body at the stake…” (pg. 50). I think that the punishment for speaking the Unspeakable Word is very foolish because saying “I” or “Me” is a transgression.

Liberty is assigned to work the soil live in the home of the Peasants further away than the city. Women work in the fields with white tunics. “And their white tunics in the wind are like the wings of seagulls beating over the black soil…” (pg. 40). Liberty notices Equality staring at her, and soon enough she ends up talking to him and liking him, which is a great transgression. The great crime is for men to take notice in women and that women are forbidden to take notice of men.

What is a transgression of Preference? How did Equality commit such a transgression or transgressions?

A transgression of preference is a sin in showing somebody that you like them. Equality transgression was talking to Liberty 5-3000. This is a sin because men are not supposed to take notice of women, “For men are forbidden to take notice of women, and women are forbidden to take notice of men. But we think of one among women, they whose name is Liberty 5-3000, and we think of no others”.

Who is liberty and what does she do?

Liberty is basically the leader of all the women. She met Equality while he was doing his job, street sweeping. Liberty did something against the rules and that was speaking to Equality, “What is your name?”. “Equality 7-2521,” we answered. You are not one of our brothers, Equality 7-2521, for we do not wish you to be”. It turns out that Equality likes Liberty 5-3000.

How are children raised in Equality's society?

The children in Equality’s society are raised to be similar and equal. They are always being told how being different and having differences are bad since they were young so it’ll be easier for them to adapt to the system they have when they get older. They raise them with strict manners, they tell them all the bad consequences that might come upon them if they don’t listen to them and try to go against the rules that they gave them to follow. They tell the children all the legends of what has happened in the past. “We have heard the legends of the great fighting, in which many men fought on one side and only a few on the other (48).” These scare some children which make them more into following the rules.

    What are the Unmentionable Times?

The Unmentionable Times was described in the book as the past before this whole system of life was established. When the world was like how it is right now for us, which is what we call “normal”. The only things most of the people apparently know about this time are mainly legends and thoughts. “We wonder how it come to pass that these secrets were lost to the world (48).” The people who supported what they were doing in the Unmentionable Times were called the Evil Ones, and they were hated by everyone else. “All the things made by the Evil Ones were burned… (48) the fire which is called the Dawn of the Great Rebirth, was the Script Fire where all of the scripts of the Evil Ones were burned (49).” Questions that may relate to this past is forbidden ask and to think of.

The Unmentionable Times were the times before the Great Rebirth. As Equality was looking into the Uncharted Forest, he thought of “the secrets of the Unmentionable Times,” and of the fighting against the “Evil Ones”. The Evil Ones were conquered and “a great fire raged over the land,” ending them and their legacy. I think the Unmentionable Times were our time, because of what the Old Ones said in chapter 1, “they whispered many strange things, of the towers which rose to the sky... and the wagons which moved without horses, and the lights with burned without flame.” If the Evil Ones were all killed, how did the Old Ones, who still know about the Unmentionable Times, survive?

The Punishment for speaking the Unspeakable Word is death. “One single word which is not in the language of men...which no men may speak nor hear.” Equality mentions that this word had existed but is now forbidden, and he mentions sometimes in old manuscript or in ancient stones, men could find it. “We have seen one of such men burned alive in the square of the City.” Equality explains how he witnessed the execution of the man who spoke the Unspeakable Word, and how he acted, “there was a thin thread of blood running down the corner of their mouth, but the lips were smiling.” Equality also explained the man’s last moments, how he singled Equality out from the crowd and tried to pass on the Unspeakable Word but Equality didn’t guess the word in time.

So men are not allowed to think about women until the Time of Mating. In the spring men that are older than twenty and women who are older than eighteen are sent to the City Palace of Mating. Each man is assigned to a woman by the Council of Eugenics. Then children are born in the winter, but the women never see the child, and the child doesn't know the mother. “We been sent to the Place of Mating, but it is an ugly and shameful matter, of which we do not like to think…”(page 41). Equality might think its a “shameful matter” because he is not supposed to think about it. He has been thinking about the Golden One for a while. “ We had broken so many laws, and today we have broken one more. Today, we spoke to the Golden One…” (page 42). Thinking about a girl is frowned upon.

Speaking the Unspeakable Word is being burned alive in front of everyone. When people say the Unspeakable word they are punished. They tear out their tongues so that they cannot speak anymore. “They had torn out the tongue of the Transgressor so that they could speak no longer...”(pg. 50). The Transgressor didn't have a care in the world; they had the calmest and happiest face. “ And it was a sight which has stayed with us through the years, and it haunts us, and follows us, and gives us no rest…”(page 50).

Equality is afraid of the Uncharted Forest because he has no idea what is in the forest and is afraid of the outcome of going in the forest. "These men never return'' pg 48. I thought this was a good quote because it helps represent what made him fear the Uncharted forest. The punishment for the unspeakable word is death.''As the chains wound over their body.''50. This shows how cruel the punishment was.

Equality is afraid of the Uncharted forest because he has no idea what is in there, it is uncharted after all, It is said that anyone who goes into the forest never returns. "These men do not return." pg 48.

The punishment for the unspeakable word is death, which demonstrates how much the government censors the people and how cruel they are. “They had torn out the tongue of the Transgressor so that they could speak no longer" pg 50.

In the reading Equality is afraid of the Uncharted Forest. The forest has yet to be explored and no one knew much about this forest. People had said, “they wish to not think of it.” Everyone that goes into the forest doesn't return out, everyone is afraid of the outcome of what could happen if you go into the forest. The punishment for the unspeakable word is death. This shows that the government had a lot of control on what people could say and what they could not say. It just showed how unfair and cruel they are as well.

When Equality Mentions ‘They’ He is actually just talking about Liberty, The Golden One. But if you were to say he is saying they in the more general term, then he is saying they as in the females. I know that this is not what he means, but it shows a development in his thinking, and if he has always said ‘they’ when referring to women, then there is a flaw in the government's plan of equality. As he is saying they, he is not thinking of the as the same as him, otherwise his brain would only know to say ‘us’. So he thinks of them differently, and in turn addresses them differently. This is a development, because it could lead to his mind thinking things like, “well some of my brothers are different from me as well, could thi mean I should see them as different from me also?” This could eventually lead him to use words like I, Me, etc (If he even knows those words) If the government has always had the people address the opposite gender as they, then that is a slip up on their part, because then they would be handling this type of in equal thinking to the people, for anyone smart enough (Like Equality) to figure out. I hope this made at least an inch of sense at least, but it also leads me somewhere else.
Liberty has a similar mindset to him, she doesn't want him to be her brother, “Equality 7-2521,” we answered. You are not one of our brothers, Equality 7-2521, for we do not wish you to be”As these people don't really know what real brothers are, one can assume she is talking about her fellow females. But she is also by doing and saying this noticing that she sees them as different and opening her mind to that possibility.

  17. Why does Equality care about Liberty's age?
Equality cares because when a woman turns 18, she will be sent to the Palace of Mating. He wants to prevent Liberty from being sent there so she doesn't have to experience the "ugly and shameful matter, of which we do not like to think."(p. 41)

    What are the Unmentionable Times?
The times before complete equality and unity. Before the word "I" was removed from the language. Before the Great Rebirth. When Equality talks about the Uncharted Forest, he asks: "the words of the Unmentionable Times... What are the words which we have lost?"(p. 49). Those words existed during the Unmentionable Times, but were removed since the Great Rebirth.

How are children raised in Equality's society?
Children are born in the same time, rise in the same place in the same time with same education. It is kind of similar in as where I spent most of my life:China. We wear the same uniform, we have the same class with each other, and we were educate the same even we are different to each other.
Why is Equality afraid of the Uncharted Forest?
I think equality is afraid of the Uncharted Forest because none of his brother had ever explore it and no one who had got into it came back. I felt that is not afraid, he is interested about that forest, but he is educated to not think of that.

Equality cares about liberty's age because soon she is going to the house of mating. Liberty is 17 and when she turns 18 she will be sent there. they did not want the "golden one to be sent to the palace." to prevent it they have to "bar the will of the councils."

Liberty is not One of Equality sister. Nor is Equality is one of their brothers. Liberty is one of the workers outside in the fields.
