Overview: This agenda is a plan of action for people, planet and
prosperity. It also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. We recognize
that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme
poverty, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for
sustainable development. All countries and all stakeholders, acting in
collaborative partnership, will implement this plan. We are resolved to free
the human race from the tyranny of poverty and want and to heal and secure our
planet. We are determined to take the bold and transformative steps which are
urgently needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path. As we
embark on this collective journey, we pledge that no one will be left behind.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets which we are announcing
today demonstrate the scale and ambition of this new universal Agenda. They
seek to build on the Millennium Development Goals and complete what these did
not achieve. They seek to realize the human rights of all and to achieve gender
equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. They are integrated and
indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the
economic, social and environmental.
Directions: Please visit The Global Goals for Sustainable Development website below. Find 1-2 goals you would like to explore this year. Explain why your choices would be important to you. How do you see this playing out in the literature we read?

I decided to select two sustainable goals for the 2018-2019 school year. Almost two years ago, I decided to become a vegan after watching a documentary called “Food Choices,” which inspired me to make the life change and read a series of books, scientific articles, and interviews about the food industry and its impact on not only animals, but the environment. Therefore, I want to focus on “SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.” I not only have switched to a vegan diet, but started to only wear clothing that is environmentally sound and cruelty free.
ReplyDeleteFurther, my work this year with Sustainable Global Goals and Teaching Global Classrooms extended from last year’s Fulbright program. With our class blog and new grading system, I am hoping to promote genuine learning and change the way we view school and testing. With the implementation of global initiatives to enrich our literature units, I hope students will feel the immediacy of literature and make the books more meaningful. Further, TGC hopes students will become global citizens who take action to the world’s needs. I look forward to taking action with all of you. Therefore, my other focus will be “SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”
I look forward to working with all of you this year!

ReplyDeleteThe two topics I chose were clean water and zero hunger. I chose these because these topics are very important to this world right now. You need food and water to live. The most important thing is food and water. Also there are many people without water so this is bad for many reasons because they cannot live without water.
Luke Newton
ReplyDeleteI think something really important that we as a species need to work on is clean water. Everyone needs water and many places water is so hard to come by people end up dying of dehydration. Clean and available water is a really important issue.
Olivia Dionisio
ReplyDeleteMy topic is quality education. I chose this because everyone deserves to have the best education they can so they can succeed in the future and do what they enjoy to do. I can see this playing out in the literature because to write a book you need to have a some sort of basic education and you can write a book from anywhere in the world so if everyone has equal education then more people can write books and do fun things in their lives.

ReplyDeleteI selected one goal for this year, Sustainable Development Goal 3, Good Health and Well-Being. The reason why I wanted to do this one was because my family finds taking care of our health is very important because they value it. We also know many people don’t have access to the medical care that is available to us. So I feel like trying to help out in that cause would not only help others but give me more information and a better idea of what’s going on around us when it comes to medical business.

ReplyDeleteThe two topics i chose where Life below the ocean and poverty. I chose life below the ocean because I am a scuba diver and care alot about our oceans. I think it is terrible how much pollution is being put into our oceans. I also chose poverty because I beleive every one deserves to have money to purchase food, clean water, and a home.
Dylan Brenner
ReplyDeleteOne topic I chose was good health and well-being because it is important for everyone of all ages to live their best life. In 2013 about 1.25 million people died from road traffic injuries. To ensure that people live a healthy life people need to be careful at whatever they are doing. It is important for everybody to have good health.
Jacob Moore
ReplyDeleteI chose number 14 because I have always enjoyed the ocean and I almost want to give back because I have so many good memory's of being on the beach and fishing with my dad. Also the beach Really reminds me of my grandmother because when I was younger she would take me down to the beach and we would go to the rocks and catch crabs and little fish in nets.
I can see this playing into literature if we were to ever read a book about the ocean. it might show how polluted the ocean is and it might bring some attention to the matter.
Hanna Saad
ReplyDeleteI chose life below water we have not even explored most of the sea a water we have on earth. We need fish for food and we can use species of horseshoe crab and jelly fish for medical porpoises. Since we tend to over fish and take home undersized fish before they could repopulate. Then sea world can't enslave more killer whales.

I decided to choose one big goal in the 2018-2019 school year. Was to ensure availability and sustainable water and sanitation for all. I think is would be a very helpful goal in the year because it would help a lot of people in need of a clean and satiable water source. I think that this would help a lot of the worlds problems.

ReplyDeleteI decided to select one goal for the 2018-2019 school year, which is zero hunger. I chose this because I have seen an article which said that we produce weigh more food for feeding everyone. So why are there still so many hungers in the world. I think it is a very important problem for everyone to think about.

ReplyDeleteI decided to choose one sustainable goal for the school year. To make sure underwater life is safe and make sure people are aware that the animals underwater matter too. Most people eat shellfish and kill them without flinching. Scientists expect ALL fish to be extinct in 2048. That is not that far along. Looking at how much ocean there is, this should not happen. In have so much technology to prevent pollution. We should be more aware of what we are throwing away. All the pollution is from our bad doings.
The two topics I picked were no poverty and life below water. I picked these two topics because there is a lot of poverty in the world and we should be able to change it. And I picked the life below water because there is life under water and we ruin their home with the pollution we make.
ReplyDeleteI selected a goal on better healthcare. Healthcare is a very expensive thing I had to get surgery this summer and it was very expensive but I had insurance. But others do not have this money causing to take a big toll on poor families causing them to suffer financially. Which is why we need to make it affordable so people have one less thing to worry about. -Griffin Littlewood

ReplyDeleteQuality education is important to me because school teaches us how to succeed in everyday life and how to excel in our future jobs. Education is important for people of all ages and its limitless. fewer than half of the students at the end of primary education had attained minimum proficiency levels in mathematics. Hidden Figures is a book I read, that really valued education. Hidden Figures was about 3 strong, talented, women who got a good education that led them to work at NASA.

ReplyDeleteI choose Climate Action for my goal this year. I'm very interested in the climate and global warming. I think we can control it and we should do a better job controlling it. I'm also concerned for the consequences if global warming and I think we should work harder on delaying it.
Yasmiin Ali
ReplyDeleteI decided to select one sustainable goal for the 2018-2019 school year. I traveled to Africa two times and the first I was 5 or 7 years old and the second time I was 11. The first time I went there I didn't really think about my surroundings there. However, went I went the second time I started to realize the people there and began to understand the meaning of privilege. There were some people there that lived in small huts and had goats and the kids looked hungry. Of course, my family gave them dinner every night. Therefore I choose the ‘Zero Hunger’. People who don't have meals each day makes me really upset because there are many people in this world that can help that don’t.

ReplyDeleteA topic I believe is very important is reduced hunger. Around the world there is an overwhelming amount of food, but yet there are still millions of people starving in various places worldwide. Food comes in surpluses in some countries, but is thrown away when there are starving people who would give up anything to have a quarter of what those people just ate. Recently, I found out a very disturbing fact. Every day, all the food that is not sold by the end of the day at any Dunkin' Donuts, gets thrown out. All of it! Let's calculate that, as of 2013 there are over 7.5 hundred Dunkin' Donuts in the US. If each one throws out 5 lbs. of food a day (it is a lot more than that in reality) it will come out to 37,500 lbs. of food DAILY that gets thrown out. They used to donate it, but because they got sued from someone getting sick, they now aren't allowed to do anything else but throw it out. If there was a was to get all of this food to people who really need it how big of a dent do you think that would make?

ReplyDeleteI chose clean water because water is something that all humans need to survive. By giving clean water to people, we can also prevent some waterborne diseases from spreading like cholera and e. coli.
Robbie Mahlebjian
ReplyDeleteI chose life under water and peace, justice, and strong institutions. I chose Life Under Water because a lot of fishers are overfishing species like salmon for caviar. I also chose this topic because of pollution in the water also killing multiple fish. The other topic I read about is peace and justice which is very important because though a lot of homicide and other crimes have went down but still many more people to bring to justice.
